We were lucky to catch up with Sajaa. recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sajaa. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I truly have the best supporters the world has seen in my parents. As an independent artist, every step I take is built on their love, belief, and sacrifice. No one believes in my dream more fiercely than they do. My dad has taken a huge risk investing in my dream. Not just financially but with his time, his energy and his whole heart. He’s a retired Canadian Army veteran who spent 23 years of his life serving and protecting our country and now he’s giving every bit of himself to help me pursue the dream that means everything to me. I am endlessly grateful for him: for his strength and for the way he shows up for me without hesitation.
My mom is my emotional anchor. She pours life into me with every conversation, every word of encouragement and every moment she sits with me through the tears and the tough days. She’s the one who calms my mind, reminds me of my purpose and helps me see the light when things feel overwhelming. After every show, she’s right there helping me take my makeup off and letting my hair down. Simple things that mean the world to me. Her tenderness is its own kind of bravery.
Both of my parents support me in ways big and small, in ways seen and unseen. Together, they lift me in ways the world will never fully see. I would not be half the artist or half the person I am today without them. Their love is the foundation of everything I do and I carry them with me in every performance, every song, every step forward.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a singer-songwriter born and raised in Montreal with a deep-rooted passion for music and singing. Though my love for music has always been there, I really started taking it seriously around 2016 when I began writing my first EP, ‘Blurred Minds & Perspectives.’, on a beach in Varadero. I was curious about what it would be like to write a full musical project with a concept. After many ups and downs, I finally released my debut EP in November 2023.
Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to perform at a televised gala, release my sophomore EP ‘Vivid Dreams and Intuitions.’ in September 2025 and even headline my very first headline show. My music was also featured on CBC’s Top 20 for over 7 weeks.
One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to set the tone for many artists in the Neo-Soul genre here in Canada. Neo-soul is still a relatively niche genre in the country and I’m working hard to make it more prominent.
In just 2 years of my career, I’ve seen my music reach listeners across all continents and the growth has been incredible. I’m beyond proud of what my team and I have accomplished in such a short amount of time. I’m definitely setting the tone to be an artist to watch in the near future.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
In my journey through music, I’ve had to learn that not everything is within my control, even though I direct and manage much of what I do. I work with an amazing team and while we all share a vision, everyone has their own lives, different schedules and different priorities. Not everything happens on my timeline or exactly when I think it should. Letting go of that need for control has been an ongoing process and it’s something I’m still learning, but in doing so, I’ve found that it’s helped me feel less anxious about the outcome of things. My perspective has shifted; I now allow mistakes to happen, both in my work and in myself. Embracing imperfection has been freeing because it’s given me room to grow, to learn from what doesn’t go right and to trust the process more. In the end, I’m finding peace in the unpredictability and that has made all the difference.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I run an online book club called The Velvety Book Club, where I share my love for reading. Especially fiction. But every now and then, a non-fiction book comes along that really resonates with me. More Than Enough by Elaine Welteroth is one of those books. It taught me so much about claiming my space in the creative world as a Black woman. One quote that has stuck with me is: “When the world tells you to shrink, expand.” It’s such a powerful reminder of self-love, power, and resilience. One of the themes explored in the book is the importance of becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable. Music has been pushing me out of my comfort zone in every way possible and this book made me feel seen, makes me feel like I’m not alone in that journey. It was a beautiful, empowering read that I’m grateful to have come across.
