We were lucky to catch up with Saint Tru (Formerly known as I.Am.Tru.Starr) recently and have shared our conversation below.
Saint Tru, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project that I’ve worked on to date, despite writing songs that have hit the charts, despite putting out my own music that has definitely resonated with a lot of people over the years. The most meaningful project that I worked on as of today it has to be this VIVAHOUSE Records compilation HOUSEMUSIC volume one dropping next month. Our team, the artists, the music, the style, the soul is so beautiful and I can’t wait to present this to the world. This is the music that y’all deserve.

Saint Tru, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been writing and releasing music for the better part of a decade, but it all started just like all of us chasing a dream and idea, Nurturing the talent that God bless you with and trying to get the most out of it. I have been blessed with a lot of opportunities. Some that have worked out in the form of gold records some that didn’t workout, but I think God for all of it. It’s lead me to meet my mentor Malik Yusef someone that I have looked to and admired and have gained a lot of knowledge and access for many years now to meeting my artist and my best friend Fya Man and those relationships are built on things that the music business just isn’t but because of that we’ve been able to Navigate through those sometimes murky waters known as the industry, and we ain’t drowned yet. I’ve been blessed to be a part of some great musical moments from the major labels all the way to The underground and Even got me a lil gold record troubles lol. So GOD IS GOOD and HOUSEMUSIC DROPPING NEXT MONTH.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Resilience is the name of the game in this world and if you don’t got it, it’ll get you. So I could go on and on about how I’ve been shot. How I’ve spent many years in federal prison and how all of those things that I experienced growing up in the ghettos of Rochester, New York, shaped not only me into the man that you see today but the view point from which I see the world. But the truth is those stories are no longer unique and that’s sad because what it says is that too many people are going through the same trials and tribulations that I have and we can all connect and relate to each other but it speaks to a deeper problem as to why we all had to go through any of it in the first place? Why were the places that we were from so rough? Why did those conditions that we were forced to live under turn us into Versions of ourselves that some of us aren’t really too proud of today, and even if we are, we’re still paying for the mistakes that those versions of ourselves made, but this is America and my story is as American as it gets. Born and raised in the ghetto with a dream that he been chasing ever since. The fact I’m still here even tho there’s days I don’t wanna be. Still standing and pushing thru after everything I’ve been thru, That’s all the illustration of resilience you need And HOUSEMUSIC drops next month

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yeah, never be afraid to pivot kids lol. I started out as an artist got millions of streams on my music, pushing to be in front of the camera but recently over the past few years, I have pivoted to more of a behind the camera executive role creating my company VIVAHOUSE Records and putting out our own music. HOUSEMUSIC drops next month. Our artists Grammy award winning Producer Fya Man, singer-songwriter Falcon Platinum producer Faded, and up-and-coming hip-hop producer Kashif we have all together crafted something very beautiful and we’re ready to present it to the world and it’s been the most exciting and gratifying part of my entire musical journey. Thus far they are amazing. The music is amazing. And HOUSEMUSIC drops next month lol
