We were lucky to catch up with SAINT CLOUD recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, SAINT thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My most meaningful project in being a part of this band has definitely been the song SOUL. I wrote that riff in early 2020 and Joe and I made an arrangement to it and jammed it in my basement for months on end. The riff truly became among our most prized idea, we had finished the writing of the song and everything, but the only problem was, it was an intro track, only 1:30 seconds long leading into it’s sister song GABRIELLE. When we budgeted our first collection of songs to record in LA, we couldn’t justify paying the price of a full song for an intro track, so our idea changed to turning it into a full song instead. It took me taking the riff and arrangement to writer/producer and Artist SAYWHEN and writing new lyrics and melodies with him to fully flesh out the song in December of 2022. To this day, I’m so glad that the song sat for a few years, because working with Say truly fulfilled and expanded upon my original vision of the song.
SAINT, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
To anyone who doesn’t know me, I’m Spencer Anthony, and I sing and play guitar in SAINT CLOUD. I moved to LA at 16 to dream chase and recorded multiple records from 2016-2021 as a solo artist with producer Mike Pepe. During that time, I really got to learn the art of crafting songs, and ultimately the art of having an idea and subsequently fulfilling that vision. Throughout this time, in Ohio, I started to connect with drummer Joe Nasser, who quickly became an integral part of my music journey. I was forced to move home from LA at the onset of the pandemic, and Joe was the first call I made. I saw me being thrust out of LA and back home as an opportunity to restart the process of turning my dream into my career, and do things the way I truly desired to. That path was being a band, that’s what I had always truly wanted. Lucky for me, Joe was down and has been a source of enthusiasm and joy since we started SAINT CLOUD together in 2020. We make music that we affectionately call “Big Budget Rock” by pulling from our more obscure influences, and then mix those influences with our love of mainstream pop, rock, hip hop, etc. to craft our sound. We want to inspire our fans to be accept the parts of themselves that they may be insecure or afraid of, and celebrate themselves and their uniqueness and individuality when they hear our music.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think society should attach to artists who make an effort to build, support, and foster the growth of their own community. When I listen to music, I want to feel like I am a part of something bigger than the music, and i think the best way to create that for my audience is to be authentic in the expression of my own creativity.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Fulfilling dreams, there is simply no feeling like hearing a rough cut or mix of a song for the first time. It’s true magic, and if it feels like true magic, I let that feeling validate it’s existence. Having my own songs be my favorite songs is the one of the most rewarding things I have experienced.
