We recently connected with Saika Satomi and have shared our conversation below.
Saika, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made?
My biggest investment was when I was 20 years old and came to the U.S. from Japan with my own savings. At the time, I first came to LA as a short-term language student. The reason was that I wanted to find something I was passionate about. I also thought that if I could speak English, I could go to many opportunities and places, communicate with many people, and enjoy life. Yes , I had a adventure , something my heart was excited about.
Now I have been in LA for 16 years and have two businesses in the US. Five years after I first came to the US in 2014, I opened the Eyelash salon SAIKA Beauty in Beverly Hills, and over the past three years, I have been creating Re:Bio probiotics supplement and starting another company and selling in Japan from 2021 and in the US from 2022.
When I was 20 years old, I spoke no English, knew no one, and had no business experience, but my decision to invest in myself at that time was the best decision of my life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When I first came to the U.S., I started out as a waitress and when I had time, I just started learning about my interests first. I loved beauty and health, so I started as a yoga instructor, then became a licensed massage and esthetician. It was hard to find a job that I truly enjoyed, but when I started doing eyelash extensions, I thought, “This is it! I was convinced that this was the job I loved.
After working at another salon for a year and a half, I decided to start my own business “SAIKA Beauty “.It was just about five years after I came to the U.S.
I opened an eyelash salon, but I had no business experience whatsoever, so I learned the business from scratch. Of course, I was clueless, so I made a lot of mistakes and spent a lot of time trying to understand the legal and business , especially in English.
I’m so greatful, the lash salon was busy from the beginning, but the year I opened SAIKA Beauty I became intestinally ill. I had daily diarrhea, bloody stools, fatigue, food allergies, and I had no idea what was causing it. I look back now and realize that since I came to the US, I was constantly working too hard, not listening to my body, and the stress and fatigue were extreme. It was then that I began to learn how important gut health is to the body and the importance of balance between work and personal life. A few years later, I began to use my knowledge and experience to develop Re:Bio probiotic supplements.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I read a lot of books before coming to the US. Especially self-help books. I don’t remember which book it was, but I saw one that said, “You should try living abroad for a few months in your life,” and I thought, “Yeah, l think I should.. It’s might be easy if it only for a few months!” I made the decision. It ended up being a long time.
I wanted to find my purpose and passion in life.
I like to keep learning,
Even after starting my own eyelash business, I never stopped growing and learning, attending many educational classes even when my business was doing well. I am always looking for new resources.I still read a lot of books, but when I don’t have time, I search You Tube for things that interest me and listen to them on the move.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I started my eyelash extension business five years after I came to the U.S. At first I did not understand English, so I used pictures and diagrams and tried to answer customers’ needs. In a customer service business, it is important to answer each customer’s needs accurately. At first I didn’t know much about customer service, but anyway, I was considerate to each customer and my desire to make them beautiful and happy led to the next customer. In the beginning, there was no social networking site, and word of mouth and reviews were our marketing tools. I still think that compassion for our customers is definitely the original source of all of business.
