We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sai Marie Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sai Marie, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I have always said that, “I’m just a woman with a dream and a pen.” That dream has been to leave a legacy – also encapulated in a quote I wrote that says, “I want nothing more than to touch the earth and leave what I hope will one day be a landmark.” Because I’ve always aimed to use my talents and voice for those who had no voice, and to educate, entertain and inspire others to be active in their mission to fulfill their dreams. I have always hoped to change my children’s lives and the future of the world by crafting a legacy that was innovative and unwilling to relent no matter what barriers or hurdles came my way. I want to show others that they, too, can adapt that philosophy and create the same strength to power through whatever life, and others, might hope to toss into their path and live the life they always dreamed of.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 90% deaf, single mother of four children. Two of my eldest sons have a terminal genetic illness that has left them completely wheelchair bound and unable to move, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. My story is one of incredible suffering and choice to keep pushing onward as a woman who had a raw talent in poetry and writing and who felt compelled to break beyond her barriers in order to give her children and herself the life she felt they deserved in spite of their diagnoses and shortcomings. I have written multiple books, and have risen an LLC as a single woman with my own disabilities, and done so with a great deal of success and I have worked myself to a place where I earn all my income off the contracts I negotiate on my own with remarkable finesse that I am greatly proud of. I have set the bar in showing that I can write great stories no matter what comes against me, and also provide consistent services that result in captivating written pieces produced in record timing and also maintain a satisfactory clientele while doing so.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I began my writing career online as a text-based roleplayer and blogger while being a stay at home mother with toddlers. From there, the amount of people who encouraged me after reading my works resulted in me spiderwebbing out to expand into other channels and platforms as well as transmedia to expand my artistic goals and reach.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was so intent on making my freelancing happen that while homeless and after my eldest son was on life support – I would sit at the library or public park using free wifi in those spaces in order to complete my projects from my car. I did this at motels and hotels, campgrounds, and all over the United States depending on what was going on in my life at the time.
