Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sahily Picon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sahily, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I technically started my business in 2012, however, at the time I only had one client. About 4 years into the business I still only had that one client and then I acquired one more. Over the course of 6 years I only ever had 2 clients.
I wanted to grow and expand but I had so many fears. When I thought about getting more clients the dialogue in my head went something like this: “But attorneys are too hard to work with, what if they don’t like my writing, what if they’re too demanding, what if I can’t charge enough to make it worth it.” Essentially, I didn’t feel good enough.
But all of those fears were unfounded.
Over six years into the business I started doing personal development and that was the one thing that paved the way for me to go for my dreams despite my fears. Around mid 2019 I decided to go for it and I acquired more clients.
Not only did everyone love my work, I was charging 30% more than I ever hard.
Over time, my services were in such demand that I had to hire another attorney to help me and my prices increased.
I continued to do personal and business development and I continued to grow. In 2021 I double my income from that of 2020 and in 2023 I got close to doubling it again from 2022’s income.
I now have 4 full time attorneys and a paralegal and my team keeps growing.
The biggest lesson I would pass on to anyone who wants to start or grow their business but is afraid it won’t work out is: Do it now, do it scared. Win, lose, or draw you will learn and those lessons will make you better and stronger.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an attorney for attorneys.
The law is incredibly demanding and solo/small law firm owners usually wear all the hats in their firm (marketing, customer service, sale, HR, payroll, office manager, and attorney). One of the most time-consuming tasks for a lawyer is research and writing, especially for highly complex issues. This is where my team and I step in.
Lawyers come to us to provide them with high level research and writing, to review their cases to make sure they don’t miss anything, and to handle appeals. We usually get the difficult issues that lawyers don’t have time to dig into. All of our work is remote and my team and I can work from anywhere.
While this is a very small niche in the law, there are other legal writers in the community, but what sets us apart is our commitment to our work and our clients. When we step onto the scene, we become like a senior partner in the firm, not just a transactional freelancer. Because of this, most of my clients have been with me for years and continue to use our services on a regular basis.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
In order to double my income, I had to unlearn years of bad money habits and ideals.
In late 2019 I took a money course and that changed everything!
At first my finances were looking worse but after 5 months everything turned around and I doubled my income in 2020.
I have since continued to do money work because at every level there are new fears and things to overcome. I believe that success as a business owner has everything to do with growing yourself as a person as well as learning to run a business.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
My favorite marketing story is the story that started it all for me and it came about by following my intuition, not by following any marketing gurus.
For the first 6 years I never had more than the same 2 clients because I was afraid to grow and expand.
To make matter worse, when I finally decided to expand, I was living in a rural area and my business was remote so I had no network, not contacts, and very little opportunity for networking.
However, when I made the firm decision to acquire new clients, I started taking daily actions to align myself with that decision, and an idea just came to me. I didn’t know if it was going to work, I didn’t really know what I was doing, but I got the intuitive hit and I took action.
I am so grateful that I did!
My entire business was built on that one action. After the influx of new clients (about 5 of them) my business grew organically by word of mouth to what it is today.
The lesson there is make a decision on what you want, do whatever it takes to get your mind and body in alignment with it, then take action on whatever ideas come to you. Don’t over think it, you never know where your intuition will lead you.
