We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sahil Mahajan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sahil, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
In college I started my dj career and I was getting booked a lot in Atlanta and Statesboro. I took a chance on myself during college at Georgia southern. I was 2 classes away from finishing my degree in Finance. I had to choose between staying a extra semester in Statesboro or pursue my Dj career in Atlanta. There is not much growth for a Dj in Statesboro. I bet on myself and didn’t finish my degree to go fulfill my dreams as a Dj in Atlanta. My family is from India. In the Indian culture education is everything. I’ve always been different and believe in myself that you can do anything in this world.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always loved music and wanted to be in the music industry. I talked about being a Dj for a while. My college roommate at the time Jack Szymczak was a positive influence in my life. He’s a successful entrepreneur. He would always tell me rather than talk about it just do it. So one summer in college I bought all the Dj equipment, and taught myself on YouTube. Ever since I started about 4-5 years ago, I have not looked back. I have had the discipline to make sure I have a Dj gig every week. Many people don’t understand DJing is an art and not everyone can do it. I use to dj all type of gigs. Now I am more of a club/concert/tour Dj. I provide that I am a open format Dj that can play genre of music. What sets me apart from other Djs is my energy. Also that I play newer music people listen too. You will know when Dj Aladdin puts on a show. I have experienced DJing at all the top clubs in Atlanta working with celebrities. Also I have experienced DJing on tour as well. What I am most proud of may sound cliché. I am most proud to say every week, I work a job I love and make great money. What I ask for my current fans and potential clients is that you show love to my events when you can. Mainly when you come to my gigs don’t sit around, enjoy the music and dance!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
In this day of age, social media is a big influence on growing your business or brand. I grew my social media by being consistent with my content. In my profession posting flyers of where I’m Djing is usually required. I would constantly lose followers on Instagram posting these flyers. I made a separate Instagram for all my Dj content and flyers. It helped me keep all my followers on my main Instagram page. Now on my main page I post funny content or just stuff of me non music related. Then on my Dj page which is Dj Aladdinn I post all my music related content. My best advice for growing your social media presence is first figure out what your brand is. Next you need to find your target audience, also see what type of content your followers engage most in. Lastly, I would say stay consistent with your content.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
There are many different ways I believe I gained reputation as Dj Aladdin. I will say I am a people person. I try to interact with everyone that comes to my shows/gigs. A lot of Djs don’t play music to their crowd. I always try to read the room or my crowd and play music that they would want to hear. Being a open format Dj you can’t only play music you like. Also, I gained my reputation I believe because I always try to put on a show like it’s a concert.
