We were lucky to catch up with Sage Scott recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sage thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, one thing many business owners consider is donating a percentage of sales or profits to an organization or cause. We’d love to hear your thoughts and the story behind how and why you chose the cause or organization you donate to.
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.” — St. Augustine
But what happens when a woman who loves travel is confined to a hospital bed?
Like most midlife women, my friend Michelle has worn many hats and answers to several names. She’s a record-setting athlete, US Army veteran, wife, mother, and business executive.
She’s also my hero.
A decade ago, Michelle was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a horrific condition for which there is no cure. And true to her spirit, Michelle chose to fight back with all of her might. She transformed two decades of business technology implementation experience into a successful writing career, and she doubled down on her lifelong love of reading launching the blog Book Thoughts from Bed using technology that allows her to type by moving her eyes.
Because only a small number of Americans are diagnosed with ALS each year, medical researchers and pharmaceutical companies aren’t very motivated to find a cure. For the family and loved ones of someone who has been diagnosed with ALS, this unfortunate reality adds more heartbreak to an already devastating situation.
That’s why I personally match 100% of all proceeds generated from book, movie, and music sales from my websites in support of ALS research.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I was bitten by the travel bug as a preschooler when my family moved abroad for the first time. From my nomadic upbringing in a military family to my personal and professional travels as an adult, I have visited all 50 states, lived abroad twice, and explored nearly 30 countries.
Now settled in America’s Heartland, I share travel tips, fun facts, and photos at EverydayWanderer.com and SilverSightseer.com. I am always in search of new experiences and photo opportunities, whether here in Kansas City or halfway around the world.
My latest project is to raise awareness about alpha-gal syndrome, a tick-borne illness that results in a lifelong (often life-threatening) allergy to mammalian meat. I have been living with AGS for nearly two years, and share my tips and experiences at SageAlphaGal.com.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Not yet, but that’s my goal! My youngest child will finish high school in May 2024, and I hope to be in a position to greatly reduce (or even stop) my full-time job around that time in order to focus exclusively on my blog brands.
After my childhood in a military family, I wanted my children to live in one place where they could grow deep roots. But as the Empty Nester phase of life dawns, I am excited to return to a more nomadic lifestyle with my portable job and travel-focused side hustle.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
My side hustle has several revenue streams. Ad revenue is one of the biggest ways I earn money followed by freelance writing, photography sales, and affiliate programs like Amazon and CJ.com. Based on lessons learned from my first website, EverydayWanderer.com, I focus heavily on creating quality content and SEO and put most of my energy into that knowing that the rest will follow (e.g. ad revenue, affiliate revenue).
