We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sage Phillips a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sage, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
This may not be the kindest thing ever but certainly the first that always comes to mind. When I first started getting attention for my videos, a couple months in, I got a DM. It was from a boy in his teens and he roughly said “Hey! I know you don’t know who I am, but I’ve been watching your videos for a month or two now. I’ve been going through some rough stuff emotionally and your videos have always made my day better. I just wanted to say thank you and keep it up”. He probably doesn’t know it but that message has stuck with me ever since and its been well over a year. Where I just started making videos because I thought they were funny, other people are sharing them and its helping them get through their day. That thought and message just really makes me grateful to be in this position.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
First off Hi!! My name is Sage Phillips and I make content on Tiktok, Instagram and Youtube. I started off modeling in my teens and making music covers. However, where I really got traction was after college making funny videos on Tiktok and Instagram. I am so incredibly grateful from the support of everyone liking and commenting on my videos, the DM and now being able to make money from it. , Now I get to work with big brands and make all kinds of videos, and I get to be as creative as I want. I just did one recently for a large skincare/haircare brand that I never thought I’d get to work with and it just keeps getting more exciting.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
This is probably one of the most useful questions for anyone trying to grow, whether you’re new or been at it for a while. Consistency is the key for growth. I like to post 3 videos a day. I have plenty of days where I only post one or I’m not feeling great and rest, but! When posting that often, you begin to see the responses, how the videos perform and you pick up on patterns. This way you begin to sculpt your content, try new things and become more engaging to your audience. It’s a constant feedback loop and the more you post (even if its 9 times a day, which I don’t think I could do but go for it) the faster you get noticed and the quicker your content will grow.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part is the people I get to interact with now. I get to talk to and work with so many people that I think are hilarious and creative. The comments on my videos are also the best, I’ll scroll through sometimes and find some clever comments or read the wildest stories that I don’t think I should tell on here, but regardless the people are my favorite part!
