We were lucky to catch up with Sage Love recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sage, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
am a resourceful and resilient woman. I face the challenges of life even when I feel like giving up. I am stoic, very spiritually motivated, and I tend to think outside the box. I am a bit rebellious towards those who seek to make me conform to their rules. Perhaps most importantly, I am a survivor with strong ethics and a foundation of unlimited spiritual resources at my fingertips.
A bit about my past: I experienced domestic violence as a child and sexual abuse as a young adult. At the age of 21, I experienced police brutality (by no less than 5 male officers at least twice my age) attacking me with billy-clubs even though I was unarmed and had broken no law. The criminal justice system favored their story over mine, because I was not allowed to get the names and addresses of the group of witnesses who saw the police attack me. As a survivor, I tell this story to advocate for the millions of others like me.
I have always been very independent, mostly because relying on myself ensured my survival. After all, how could I trust that those who were supposed to protect me would do so, when my experiences suggested the opposite? The world did not feel like a safe place for me when I was a young woman. I saw men as predators, and myself as the unfortunate prey. I saw evidence of patriarchy and sexism everywhere. I needed help to recover from my personal trauma. I tried therapy off and on for 20 years, without any lasting efficacy. Medications masked (rather than solved) the root causes of my problems. My heart longed for genuine support and compassion.
I found a sense of community in church for a time, but found that the spirit of judgement towards the LGBTQ community was inconsistent with the merciful, loving God I had come to know through my relationship with Christ and the Creator. I decided to study religion in academia in order to identify and distinguish life-giving theology from death-dealing theology. I moved to Denver to get my Master of Theological Studies degree at Iliff School of Theology, with an emphasis on studying diverse world religions. I studied Shamanism, Navajo Literature and Rhetoric, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jewish Mysticism, all denominations of Christianity, Pantheism, and Cults / New Religious Movements. My thesis, “Womanist Theology and Feminine Divinity in African American Women’s Literature,” focused on Black women as Divine image bearers and self-care as a form of worshiping the divine within.
I was greatly impacted by the things I learned in college surrounding spiritual practices as a way to heal and overcome trauma. I felt a divine calling to support women in their spiritual path, teaching diverse spiritual practices tailored to my client’s specific needs, and helping women heal from trauma. I realized I am uniquely qualified to support women in their spiritual journeys because of my academic background, active listening skills, continued interest in cultural, spiritual practices and lifelong learning. Every woman is a work of art. I want to help women embody that truth and find the spiritual tools that work for them to heal, stand in their power, and boldly make a difference in their corner of the world.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I got into my this because I felt a call from the Holy Spirit to do this work. Every single experience of my life has prepared me for this sacred leadership role. By fulfilling my purpose, I honor the Divine within me and the Universe.
I provide my clients with Reiki infused, organic, handmade self-care ritual and skincare products, which can be found at www.msloveslotions.com
Problems I solve for my clients: confusion, loneliness, longing for a deeper spiritual connection, need for psychic shielding from toxic energies, needing a sense of connection to higher self, desire for a spiritual community where women and femmes are accepted for who they are, recovery from traumatic experiences, need for more confidence in themselves.
Results my clients get:
personalized one on one mentorship, care and spiritual guidance, sense of worthiness, empowerment, embodied theology, cleansing/clearing/releasing what no longer serves them, confirmation that their inner voice is always right and that they can trust it, higher consciousness and spiritual elevation, resonating on a higher frequency, attracting healthy trustworthy people into their lives, a stronger ability to say no to those people , places, opportunities and offers that are not right for them.
What sets me apart: I provide personalized eclectic spiritual services based on my clients needs. You can find tarot readers, astrologers, and Reiki healers that offer one specific service. But can you find someone who can take you on a Shamanic spiritual journey to the fifth dimension, help you heal your inner child, give you an intuitive oracle reading, perform a sound bath for you, facilitate a fire ceremony for you to release what no longer serves you, explain difficult Bible passages that many people struggle to understand, teach you about Feminine Divinity in the Bible and ancient cultures from all over the world, perform Reiki and vibrational healing for your mind-body-spirit health, teach you how to use your breath to manifest more personal power, channel messages for you from the Divine Source of all creation, and more all in one place? I am a survivor myself, so I am familiar with the process out of the shadows and into the light. I know the pitfalls, the obstacles, and the personal dedication it takes to overcome difficult circumstances and alchemize those experiences into your greatest strengths. I am an expert in my field, but I am a humble leader. In order to do this work, I must be both highly educated and humble so my clients get what they came for and feel a sense of compassion when they do.
How did I get into making my own lotions?
The first batch I ever made was unscented and intended to be given as gifts for the homeless population (along with blankets and jackets) so that people facing homelessness could survive the winter season. That batch ended up being way more product than expected, so I also gave it away to friends and family. I remember visiting a friend in Oregon for Christmas that year (2014) and gifting her a lotion. My friend’s husband was working on his car and accidentally cut his finger. She suggested he put the lotion on the cut like an ointment to stop it from burning since he was determined to continue working on the car. The next thing we knew, he burst into the living room excited to tell me that the cut was feeling much better and was no longer burning. He said it no longer hurt to wash his hands, because the lotion created a barrier so the water would not sting the cut. He was incredibly thankful. That was the first time I knew I was on to something special that could really help people in ways I had not yet thought about. Ms. Love’s Lotions is and always will be heart centered.
