We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sage Hickam. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sage below.
Hi Sage, thanks for joining us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
In 2017 I was involved in a shooting as a police officer. I was the first officer on scene (Deputy technically) and confronted an armed subject breaking in to a home. He unfortunately held the homeowners hostage and eventually lit a fire in the home after the shoot occurred. He killed two occupants in the home and the suspect burned to death in the home. We were able to get one party out. This was the beginning of the end of my law enforcement career.
In desperation, I became a REALTOR while battling issues related to PTSD from LE and my Military Career. This combined with trying to provide for my wife who stayed home and homeschooled our 3 children was nearly impossible. By God’s Grace, I persevered and now have a very successful and growing real estate career.
I started my own real estate team; we sold 27 million in real estate in Idaho last year. I have flipped multiple homes and am currently building a 10 unit tiny home community in a town named Wilder about 30 minutes from Boise. We are also custom building our first home on 5 acres in Meridian Idaho now.

Sage, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a very relationally driven individual. About 95% of my business comes from friends, family and referrals. I appreciate authenticity when working with professionals and have the same expectation for service toward my clients. Most become close friends after we complete a transaction.
I personally love seeing my team implement strategies/advice that I coach them on bi-weekly. Seeing others become successful has been the most rewarding part of my journey. I can definitely dive deeper on these topics; I’m just in the middle of about 30 things at the moment.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I could probably draw from that previous story regarding my shooting. I could draw from my experiences in Iraq. I could draw from my flips/new construction as well. I have truly come to the point where failure is only when you give up. And I really became successful when I realized I would rather fail than not try it all. There’s a point in the transaction, in the flip, in life, with your family, where things get hard. Something unexpected happens. But you have two options: keep going or give up. And I don’t quit.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Definitely the transition from Law enforcement to Real estate. It was brutal. I had some extenuating circumstances, but I wouldn’t wish it on any one. I regularly have conversations with previous police officers/first responders who want out of their jobs. But I am brutally honest with them that I am an exception and not the norm. However, if you possess the ability to keep going, no matter what, you cannot lose. You must keep going, keep growing, and keep learning.
