We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sage Breslin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sage, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
As an industry, psychology is designed to be pretty cut and dry. It engages us therapists to stay within the lines, to repeat what we’ve learned (exactly) and not to get overly invested in our clients.
So, for the first ten years of my career, that’s the practice I built. I colored within the lines, I dotted every “i” and crossed every “t”. I offered traditional psychotherapy and I achieved satisfactory results. And it felt as if the life was draining out of me.
Everything was “perfect” about the design but I didn’t feel as if I were really involved- because almost none of my humanity or unique identity was being incorporated into the treatment.
With the support of a few empowered female colleagues, I took a huge leap of faith with new clients: I shared with them my deep intuition and allowed it to guide my process.
I was finally “out.”
Soon, I began to see rapid progress in my clients- traumas that had plagued them for years were birthed into the therapy room to be resolved, clients began to report deep connection and unwavering support, and I noticed an engagement in my work that I’d never felt before.
I was finally fully present, rather than hiding the most important parts of me, and the client successes evidenced the benefits of that incredible risk.
Sage, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
To say that I have lived a colorful life is the understatement of the century. I endured sexual abuse as a girl, was trafficked as a teen, sustained a TBI at age 18, had a paralyzing injury in graduate school and have flatlined 8 times. I developed Multiple Myeloma (Bone Marrow Cancer), had a Bone Marrow Transplant and survived to tell the tale. And, rather than allowing all of those traumas to beat me down, I moved through them with resilience so that I could assist others in their healing journey.
I now spend my time empowering spiritually-driven, high-achieving women to exit toxic circumstances so that they can get their mojo back and embody the rockstar souls that they are!
I offer individual and group coaching experiences, VIP days and memberships, retreats, courses, and even an inspirational membership for those who want pearls of wisdom delivered to their email every day!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I spent 25 years as a Trauma Psychologist- champion of the underdogs, empowering victims to restore their voices, even helping women to leave abusive marriages – sometimes in the middle of the night.
I loved every minute of it.
But, when I got sick, I realized that I no longer had the energy for the advocacy and therapy I had been involved in.
I had to reinvent myself.
As I made choices for a healthier lifestyle, I became aware of many of the elements associated with my downfall. I dove deep into my own history and gained clarity and insight about what I had accepted in my life- and how it made me sick.
As I unwound it all, I learned what I needed to do to heal, and as I watch the miraculous results of my own efforts, I realized that I could easily guide others through a similar process.
Now, I can offer hope with grace and ease to those who desire to change and transform- with far less effort!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I am a firm believer of structure, repetition and consistency. Then, add a little creativity in with a side of support and VOILA! a star is born!!!
Ok- realistically, building a reputation means that you have to put yourself in front of people, be honest and transparent about your skills and offer them something they either want or can use or both!
In my early days, I provided a monthly event at my practice where folks could come enjoy a brief, informative lecture, have a snack and meet me and my staff. I attended tons of networking and community events and accepted a lot of invitations from colleagues (whether or not I thought it was a perfect fit).
I wrote articles for the paper, blogged and launched my own podcast. I supported my colleagues in person and via social media. Eventually, I became a presence across many social media platforms.
But, the best marketing tool is happy clients who share their transformations with friends, family members, colleagues and neighbors!
