We recently connected with Safir Monroe and have shared our conversation below.
Safir, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
The Airport Improvement Program that stems from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law being passed has allowed airports to extend their runway and terminal infrastructure, thus allowing passengers to travel more frequently. Because of this expansion, airports are investing more in technology and infrastructure to assist them in improving passenger way-finding and travel assistance technology.
We see a lot of opportunity in the aviation industry to provide airports with adaptable technology to solve a lot of problems airports have.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I worked at Delta Air Lines for several years as a software engineer. During my tenure, I realized that the aviation industry had many problems with its legacy systems, which led me to start UnDelay to address these issues.
UnDelay offers advanced way-finding technology, taxi queue services, and ground operation technology to enhance communication between airport operators and ground vehicle operators. Our technology has saved airports $50,000 to $60,000 by replacing legacy kiosks with faster and more efficient software. This allows guest services, airport operators, and executives to access real-time reports and promptly address various issues. Our recent launch of www.undelaymaps.com enables airports to simulate a passenger walking through the entire airport in just 10 minutes, helping travelers locate different gates much faster than with current virtual maps. As a result, passengers experience fewer delays and a more reliable travel experience, leading to higher satisfaction and improved airport NPS scores.
We are extremely proud of how much our customers love our product and constantly provide feedback to help us create new offerings and add value.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
During COVID, the travel and airline industry took a huge hit, and companies were investing less in aviation and more in just barely keeping their operations alive. Our software at the time used AI to help predict flight delays, but after losing contracts and interest in the industry, we focused more on the government sector, which allowed us to secure the airport contracts we have today.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
In the early days of UnDelay, we received a $25k grant from AfroTech and used the funds to further develop our initial MVP. This MVP aggregated radio transmissions of pilots and ATC to extract data and useful information. We rented office space near the Atlanta airport to be close enough to monitor transmissions and continuously load data for mining efforts. Although we later pivoted to a different venture, the initial capital allowed us to learn quickly and determine how we could establish value in a specific area of the aviation sector.
