We were lucky to catch up with Safeera Inayath recently and have shared our conversation below.
Safeera, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
One morning in October of 2015 I decided I bake pretty well with good flavors, so why not make it a business as I did not want to join the corporate world for a job. I had only learned baking that same year by watching tv shows and YouTube. I did a 4 sessions of learning how to make buttercream flowers at a local craft store.,,, and after that it was practice.
When I wanted a specific rainbow cake for my daughters birthday, I was not finding that style at our local bakeries, and decided to bake my first cake. At that time I had no idea I would be making more cakes!!! My interest grew from there . I would always make desserts for potlucks and events and was titled as the ‘dessert queen’
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started my part time business in oct 2015 selling cakes and cupcakes and in 2016 I learned French macarons . It was a slow business initially with word of mouth and Facebook business page.. Fast forward after my youngest was born in 2018, I quit my day job (part time) and in 2019 I made my business full time with proving custom cakes and French macarons.
My hand painted French macarons are popular for their intricacy and floral cakes as well.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My instagram account was doing very well with a great following of more than 11k followers. I started posting beautiful pictures after taking a good photography course. Beautiful pictures and videos catches the attention on social media. Liking , sharing and tagging other businesses in your niche helps your account as well. Make a presence almost everyday . Share stories.
Unfortunately my account got hacked in February and I had to restart all over on instagram. I have not created my Facebook account as yet.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
In my business, flavors and design is the key element. I made sure I use premium quality ingredients for my cakes and macarons. My designs are unique with some added edible gold in almost all my macarons and cakes.
Packaging also plays an important role. Invest in good packaging boxes.
