Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sadie Jo Reil. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sadie Jo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
My hero is my Dad! Little did he know, when he started his classic car restoration business Reil Restoration in 2015 without any prior business experience, he paved the way for my entire family to follow in his footsteps. 7 years later each individual in my family now owns and operates a small business in some capacity. His journey to business ownership has been incredibly inspiring to me seeing how he has overcome challenges times and difficulties. Embarking on my own venture, I am taking things slow and taking the lessons I have learned from him about working hard and doing business honest and right by the customer every time.
Sadie Jo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sadie Jo and I am a Jewelry maker, designer, and Small Business owner. I originally got into this trade starting at 15 years old, by just messing around in my sketchbook and some old copper sheets in my Dad’s garage. From that point forward, I never really stopped. I found how my hands loved to make, and were created to put beauty into the world.
I have soley owned and operated my business for 3 1/2 years in the Southern California area and pride myself on hand making each jewelry piece to perfection, giving each piece my hand-carved yet polished and minimalist feel.
I create a range of pieces from High Quality Fashion Jewelry to Custom & Fine, leaving space for me to be creative producing my own jewelry line while also working with custom clients to create one-of-a-kind Fine Jewelry pieces they can wear for life.
You can find my work at a variety of stores down the Orange County coastline or shop in-person at local trade shows!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think what has helped me stand out among other jewelry artists is being so involved in the making process. Everything is done in studio and I think my customer really relates and responds to the careful time and attention each jewelry piece has had gone into it during the making process, before it goes out into the world. I also feel that it’s really important to take the time to get to know each of my clients and my vendors that I work with. I think the best way to build your reputation and your business is being kind and easy to work with.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I started this business while working full-time as a Retail Store Manager at a local shop. This experience has benefited me and shaped me in so many ways as I was learning the in’s and out’s of business in retail while starting a business of my own on the side. Learning how to manage a store and forming long lasting mentor relationships along the way has now become invaluable to me. There really wasn’t ever going to be a perfect time to dive head-first into going full time on my business so after setting aside some cash, I decided after 2 1/2 years to just go for it. It was and still is terrifying but I really have learned and grown so much by allowing myself to not choose comfort and to figure it out as I go, day by day!
