We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sadie Fienberg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Sadie, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?

All in all, running my own business is awesome but, as with everything, there are pros and cons. Being my own boss allows me the freedom to control every aspect of my business, but it also brings some unpredictability. Being an entrepreneur means I have to handle a wide range of responsibilities. In a regular job, things like pay, benefits, and schedules are typically taken care of for you. Paving my own path as a business owner opened my eyes to the roadblocks and detours that come with being my own boss. However, the freedom and flexibility I’ve gained makes it all worth it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Sadie Fienberg, and I’m the owner of Butterfly Creative Projects (BCP), a Reno, Nevada-based graphic and web design studio. I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno’s Reynolds School of Journalism in 2016. After graduation, I stayed in Reno and worked in marketing for various companies while I tried to find clients on the side. Now, in 2023, I’m living the dream, and running BCP full-time! Butterfly Creative Projects stems from the idea that no two butterflies are alike–just like our clients and their business needs. Your project, much like a caterpillar’s transformation into a butterfly, begins as an idea and transforms into something beautiful!

As a savvy entrepreneur, I am passionate about bold design that helps businesses make a great impression and land the sale! My expertise spans various industries, including wellness, real estate, medical, food service, and beauty. I offer a wide variety of design services, including logos, business cards, invitations, flyers, web design, presentations, print advertisements, restaurant menus, and more!

Have you ever had to pivot?

During my time as a graphic designer in corporate marketing, I faced the challenge of juggling my full-time job by day and working on my business at night. Doing creative work for my regular job in addition to my business became draining. To meet the ultimate goal of working for myself, I needed to pivot. So, I switched over to the HR department, where I gained valuable skills that proved beneficial for both my day job and my business. I learned essential topics that any business owner should be familiar with, such as having important conversations with employees, improving leadership skills, conducting company-wide training, and reviewing resumes. This knowledge has been valuable to me in the past and continues to be useful today.

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?

More often than not, the best opportunities find us when we least expect them. One of my favorite marketing stories takes place on Facebook. I came across a post in a group with over 30,000 members. The author of the post was in the medical industry searching for a graphic designer to help with a PowerPoint. If they are posting in a group of that size, they must need help ASAP, right? Although many others had commented offering their services, I took the leap and responded by acknowledging their sense of urgency, letting them know I could offer help that day, and proceeded to give them my contact information. In the end, my tenacity and follow-through stood out! What started out as a small, last-minute project, gradually turned into a 3-year working relationship where we collaborate 30-hours a month!
