We recently connected with Sadie Burbank and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sadie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The mission behind Space By Sadie is to elevate homes through sophisticated spatial design. Whether you are looking for interior design advice or preparing your home for display, Space By Sadie is here to eliminate the stress of it all. I have a background in textile design from the University of Georgia combined with many years of successful project design experience in California, New York, Colorado and Georgia.
Upon learning that my grandfather founded his own interior design firm in Cincinnati and then watching my father run his own interior design firm in Atlanta, I knew I wanted to carry on the family legacy from a young age. My mother was also an interior designer, specializing in kitchens, so I’ve quite literally inherited an eye for design. Any space that I enter I am constantly thinking of ways to move around furniture or change the color palette to create a fresh perspective and relax the mind. I will simplify your life by making the right choices for a multitude of spatial design projects.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Space By Sadie interior design and home staging was officially established three years ago in 2021, but my business has truly been on a journey for over 10 years. Most of my life I remember friends, family or people I just met constantly asking me for advice: Where should I hang this? What do you think of this color? Do I need a table here? For a long time I gave this advice away for free thinking I was simply helping someone in need. You see I was raised on the Golden Rule principal, we shall do onto others as we would do onto ourselves.
In many ways this is absolutely true and I have chosen to dedicate myself to service where I can. I have also come to learn that I possess a rare talent – the ability to make spatial decisions and exercise creative control is something not be taken for granted. We do not always value creatives with gracious income or social praise in our society, but we should. Building a creative business is a delicate process that prompts self awareness, refinement of one’s skills, and true grit.
Confidence in the services that I offer, such as spatial specking, vision boards, purchase recommendations and product installation. Cultivating strong, long lasting, trust-focused relationships my clients. Designing homes through a minimalist perspective and the belief that less is more. These are some of the things that I am most proud of. I enjoy collaborating closely with people, to make the design process more affordable and stress free, and to ultimately make people smile!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Bringing a new idea to life is the most rewarding aspect of my work. I’m a person who listens for a living and of course, as with any job, the thing I love most is not front and center every working day. But again and again, I get to meet interesting people who are invested in the unique stories of their spaces. Whether it be where they gather, where they think or where they find the comfort to relax. The process of moving from an idea to a fully realized new space is a thrill every time. For me, the challenge is finding a fluidity and ease in the creation of a new project: a balance between problem solving and openness to a new outcome.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
The most important resource to highlight are the relationships you build with other professionals. Even if someone may not work in your field, it is important to cultivate strong bonds wherever you go. This will take you far in life as we all can attest to – it’s all about who you know. I’d like to take a moment to share my gratitude and give a quick shoutout to four very important influences on my life and on my small business today.
Firstly I would like to thank my mother, Donna, and my father, Doug, for encouraging me to travel, to absorb my surroundings, to express creativity at every turn and to treat others with kindness. My entrepreneurial drive along with my desire to show people a world influenced by the history of design comes from you mom and dad – thank you. Secondly I would like to give credit to two small business owners and very close friends, Kristin Fedyk of Inland Venice and Alberto Hernandez of Meshika Hats. I met these unique trailblazers in Los Angeles decades ago and ever since they have encouraged me to be 100% myself while both exhibiting a real journey to small business success.
So get out there and mingle – you never know where it might take you!
