We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sadi Garmentz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sadi below.
Hi Sadi, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Basically I was in a grieving period my grandpa had just passed I was in a state of loneliness. My grandfather was my everything… and when he passed I felt alone. At the time I was thinking of names for my brand and all I could really think of was Abandoned… cause I felt like my grandpa left me. I call my potna he was upcoming model / designer RIP ZONA~ I was picking his brain about the concept and he told me it was to niche and I should try to look outside the box… I just said outta nowhere “ I JUST WANNA LEAVE THIS EARTH “…
[ mentally ] then I said I jus wanna be UnEarthed… then it jus came to me •UNEARTH•
Sadi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey my names Sadi’ Garmentz. I’m a brand owner / designer for my clothing brand UNEARTH. I recently moved from New Orleans to Dallas around 7 months ago. I wanted to join the fashion industry because it’s something I’ve always dabbled in, whether it was sewing my khakis before school to make em skinny, to goin to the thrift after school to find some gems, clothing and fashion was always something that was close to my heart. My brand is focused on creating unique and outspoken garmentz. What I feels sets me apart from others is that this is something I’m very passionate about, I’ve put my last dollar into my business multiple times, there’s no plan B and this isn’t a hobby. This is my passion and something I’m gonna be doin for the rest of my life. What also sets me apart is the fact that I’m not afraid to be me… I don’t do it for likes or clout. I simply wanna make fire garmentz and I want people to put that sh*t on and show out. I don’t care about showing my face, I want my clothes to be what’s recognized when I step out not me as a person. I’m doing this because it’s what I love to do point blank.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Before I moved here to Dallas I was in New Orleans. New crib new car me and my cousin as room mates just living life to the fullest. I was working on my brand at the time and business was doin great! New Orleans is a small knit community so one person like something it’ll get around quickly! So fast forward car got stolen… me and my cousin no longer had transportation so it was a “ what are we gonna do “ type of situation because transportation is needed!
I sat down for 2 days straight shrouded in thought… I knew there was something I can do but I never wanted to do because it was always the last option. But I finally decided to move to Texas since it’s where most of my family is anyway and they’ve been begging me to move down there, I jus took that mishap as a sign that God wants me to move to Texas and since I wasn’t gonna do it on my own he sped up the process a little. Thank Goodness he did because if our ship never got stolen I would’ve never left one of the most beautiful yet most dangerous cities in the United States. #nolababy
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When I moved out here a lesson I had to unlearn is new friends, but not all the way. What I mean is in this business you need to be able to network, connect, and work with other people. It’s not a NEED but it’s something that definitely makes an impact. Where I’m from we rock with who rock with us and when I moved out here I didn’t know anybody. I’d go somewhere with my brand on and someone gives me a compliment about my clothes I say Thankyou and when they try to start conversation is when I get iffy vibes because where I’m from the friendly sh*t not really common… with strangers that is. But out here people
[ most of em ] really genuine and really supportive and I f*ck with that. I’m still hesitant when it come to making new friends but new clientele and supporters are always welcomed
