We recently connected with SADFAM Records and have shared our conversation below.
Hi SADFAM, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Through this project, we appreciate the function of music in the context of a community and outside the context of mainstream modes of online engagement. Song a Day for a Month operates without play counts, like buttons, or monetization. It’s donation-based, following the model of the Vipassana retreat centers. This creates a social space where music exists for creative expression and community connection that is outside the logic of advertising and algorithms. Musicians offer thoughtful feedback instead of likes, and raw creative ideas that might never surface in other social media or streaming platforms.

SADFAM, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are Song a Day for a Month, an underground music community where participants write and record one song daily for a month. This practice transforms our approach to creativity and shows us the power of sustained creative work within a supportive community.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can support artists by creating alternative spaces and modes of support. Subscribing to our record label and music co-op is the best way one can support our project and the artists involved. Find us on sadfamrecords.bandcamp.com and songadayforamonth.com.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
We are constantly learning how to weave the creative act in our daily lives. This involves figuring out and following our own patterns of energy and inspiration. The creative act helps us find the magic in everyday life. Through it, we unlearn patterns of self-judgement and place more value in the process of the creative act, and develop an attitude of equanimity/impartiality about the results. We hope you’ll join us on songadayforamonth.com!
