We were lucky to catch up with Sadé Lemons recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sadé, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally when I was very young (about 7 yrs old). One of the first things I wanted to be as a career choice was an artist. I was always drawing or painting something in my spare time and was pretty good at it. As I got older, I slowly grew an interest in the medical field; however, the artistic/creative abilities and desires never died. When I first entered high school, I decided to take a chance and audition to be a part of the performing arts school WCSPA. I totally bombed the singing, dancing, and acting, and it left me thinking that the industry wasn’t meant for me. Fast forwarding to college, my confidence continued to grow and I wanted to put myself out there a bit more; I became interested in modeling. When I had the time, I took more pictures and posted more on social media in general. As people began to notice me and my interest to be a model and content creator, is really when I realized I could make it a professional career path and that it was meant to be.
Sadé, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the artistic/creative industry by trusting myself and taking a leap of faith with my potential. I know myself of having multiple different interests and passions and I want to be able to experience
them all in this life. Pretty much my whole life I have been a student-athlete, so a lot of my time was focused on homework, studying, and training for basketball. I was okay with that because I loved the sport and learning about my academic interests in school. However, I have always loved the arts as well including drawing, painting, acting, and modeling. When I found myself with a little more time, I decided to reach out and start getting professional pictures taken of me to post. This was during the tail-end of my undergraduate career and as I continued to do so, the more opportunities came rolling in. This also gave me a chance to indulge in another interest of mine, video and picture editing. As of now, I have expanded my resume as a model and became a content creator. I provide quality promotional content for different brands through collaborations and brand ambassadorships, as well as instagram tutorials/tips for taking care and styling naturally curly, kinky hair. Like I said, I have a wide range of interests! I found myself being able to really show the world about my passion for natural, curly, kinky hair mainly targeted to black men and women. I love seeing others be inspired by me to go on their own natural hair journeys and being connected to my community in general, we can all inspire each other! I am most proud of my resilience, inspiration, and
motivation that I provide for others. It warms my heart to get messages saying that I have helped someone in any way. I say I am proud of my resilience because navigating this industry and social media can be tough! I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know that I put my heart into my work and that I take pride in having a great work ethic. I am dedicated to having the lifestyle I want while making an impact along the way. My brand is a positive, safe space that pushes being the best person you can be.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I feel like non-creatives will struggle to understand the creative journey in a way that they don’t know how much work goes into being creative and making it lucrative. A lot of people have to find their niche while also being appealing to the audience. Then as a creative, you have to be consistent, consistency is rewarded with results. A lot of time is put into planning content, editing, making the content, and engaging with supporters regarding the content. Although this work may look like “fun” to non-creatives, there still is a lot of time and thought that goes into creating.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is having the ability to inspire people and be someone that others see themselves in.
