We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sacha Kishlar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sacha , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
In the world of exotic car dealing you will always have crazy encounters or missions to accomplish to get the deal done. However, none of us think that a car deal can go deadly wrong. I was in New York buying some cars for clients over the weekend as I usually would do back then, mind you this was well before Uber was around. I finally get to the first car after being stuck in terrible Manhattan traffic and this is where the red flags are sounding off. First, the vin was not matching to what was described, lots of undercarriage issues, etc… it was junk! I was furious for the seller thinking he could pull a fast one on me, but I just wanted to get a move on to the next car on my agenda. There was drizzle of snow coming down at this point and I had to wait for a taxi to take me to my next car, I finally find a taxi service with fair rates to take me back to Manhattan. The taxi arrived over an hour later and once I got in the driver informed me that his “boss” wanted to discuss the fare, at this point I was livid and did not want to here anymore nonsense. Before I could even get a word out on the phone, the left rear door opens and there is a glock pointed at my face. My life flew by me just like how you see it in the movies, they grabbed my duffel bag from my lap and bolt away. I did not even cross my mind to not chase after the assailant, so I go bolting out of the taxi and once I did that, the taxi screeches away as well. At this point I knew it was a set up and I start chasing my assailant not caring that they could turn back and fire at me at any point in time. I chase him down for three blocks running in and out of incoming traffic with no regard, until finally my assailant hops into the back of a 90s Chevy c10 pick up truck and rides off with my duffel bag containing all my equipment, paperwork, and most importantly lots of my money! Devastated and out of energy, I head back to the scene of the crime to where a good samaritan had flagged down a police cruiser. I run my story by the officer and the hunt was on, detectives showed up within minutes and demanding the owner of the taxi company to get the driver back to the scene of the crime. Once the taxi driver showed up and was being interrogated by detectives and denying his involvement with the set up, which was a lie. I then shoved him into a soda machine and was making sure he knew he messed with the wrong guy. Unfortunately, the detectives had to separate me from the taxi driver before I the victim would endure any charges. The detectives finally take me back to the station to get my statement and so I can identify some individuals from a line up, I was able to immediately identify to individuals from their line up. Unfortunately, my case never made it to their priority to the police. A few years go by and the detective that was handling my case calls me and states that he was not supposed to tell me, but thought it would make my day, which was that the main guy in charge of my set up had been shot several times and looks like Swiss cheese. The detective was indeed correct that it did make my day knowing that karma came back in my favor and I kept moving forward. At the end of the day, it taught me a very expensive lesson as it took me several years to recoup from this and had to work that much harder to offset my losses from that day, but I was very fortunate that I did not get killed or injured during this crazy car deal gone wrong
Sacha , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been into cars since I was conceived, that’s a given. I’ve done it all from being a technician at Indy shops and franchise dealers, to being the youngest sales managers at a high volume dealer in ft lauderdale, and finally scaling up to running my own business.
I decided to open up shop because I knew I could offer a better VIP service to my clients that wanted nothing to do with any traditional dealership what so ever. People know that when they come to me, they will not have a “carmax” experience where you will have several hundred cars to choose from on the lot but rather a more one on one experience that caters to their every need. Most of my clients are top tier business people, celebrities, and some overseas dealers.
Fortunately for me I am also a licensed realtor in Florida as well as an investor, so not only am I able to guide my clients through their home buying / selling needs but I can put them behind the wheel of their dream car.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I’ve built my portfolio as it sits today from scratch with just a few post it notes, a small filing cabinet, and a laptop. Just like any great entrepreneur, you have to accept the magnitude of sacrifice & self discipline it takes to run a successful business. You always have to adapt to change and be an intuitive problem solver. All my business, both cars and properties has all been accomplished by word of mouth and referrals.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I have been working for myself since I was a kid, from mowing all the neighbors lawns, detailing cars, flipping goods from garage sales, and even running a successful eBay store at one point in time. From all those ventures I was able to take some of those funds and invest them early on into the stock market. Between those investments and some money I had saved up from working in the corporate world, I was able to start my business.
