We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sacha Harford a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sacha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
As a veteran makeup and hair artist , besides my set work which I have done for many years , I am in the process of creating a brand and educating fellow artist and new artist , inspire , create and use all of my knowledge to advertise my ideas and brand .
My brand will be out in a few months , probably in a couple of months , my journey will come full circle in this process .
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born in Kingston Jamaica and moved to the US at 12 years old, most of my talents in school was really about art and music .
I worked hard and I got into and attended Parsons school of design in NY briefly but was scouted as a model while in school , while modeling I learned about the makeup world and fell in love! after years on set working with models and celebrities , I decided to get my cosmetology license , I trained with great hairstylist and salons and incorporated this into my set work . As a overall artist makeup and hair has allowed me to travel, create and meet wonderful artist and talent .
I provide fashion , celebrity, advertising makeup and hair , it’s important to me to not only nourish my talents beauty / glamour but I also help facilitate dreams, art, ideas and confidence.
My flexibility to understand different cultural and genre specific ideas are my strengths, I am open minded and flexible but love when ideas are well planned and executed.
My biggest problem solving tactic is bringing different types of people together, I am fully all inclusive and I understand many types of crowds.
I am moving towards branding and education, my brand launches 2023 fall and is wonderful multi purpose makeup and art tool, I plan on building upon my ideas and evolving in the beauty world and our changing world in general .
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Artist inspire and insight , art is mirror of our society , importance of artist is relevant but society at times does not understand the importance, throughout history , art has shown us the way through all of life’s challenges.
It’s important to me to boast education in art and music , it allows humanity to reflect and speak to issues.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Non creatives at times don’t understand the relevance of art , anything in the arts is a array road , so many choices and personalities in the arts , we honed our art through a far amount of evolution and some pain , the colors of life paint art , many non artist don’t understand that , artist can be huge one day and not so much another day but then become huge all over again .
The road is a bit up and down at times but dreams take time to navigate , artist live within their dreams but enough belief and hard work can reward artist , most of all for non-creatives should know all things are possible but in this era artist must be smart at marketing , we have come to an era of explosive commerce , marketing is also art ! For non creatives they should know that this is the bridge between the non art world and the art world .
