Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sabrina Whipple. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sabrina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
QueenBWavin! My baby! I created this company or this person I should say because the world needed her! Back story; I was known for having long, pretty and thick hair! Most beauticians would either charge me extra or refuse to do my hair. They would say it took up too much time. I understand because that’s why I never liked doing my hair myself and my mom couldn’t tame it lol! I was always curious though what I would look like with short hair. Over the years, I’ve cut my hair a couple of times. My hair was always long enough for some sort of ponytail. It would grow back and that’s that. In the summer of 2018, I went to my best friend, Vocal Maestro and told him I really wanted to cut my hair. He hated the idea but was tired of me asking so he cut it into a really short cut. By this time I hadn’t had any relaxers for 7 years. He wanted to use one on my sides and I refused. I went to the barbershop and asked them to shave my sides and give me a design but leave my hair in the top. I did that for a few months and dyed my hair different colors. Now it’s New Year’s Eve and my hair looks a mess. I need a haircut and my color looks dirty. I told my barber Corey Lewis and barberzone barbershop that I wanted to start over and just cut the color out my hair. He said ok but I think I have an idea. Next thing I knew I had a brush cut. I cried holding my hair. He said no tears baby girl. I’m going to make you into a star! He just wait and see! A few weeks go by and I need a cut. All I knew how to do was massage oil into my scalp and put on a durag. I told him my hair was waving up and he said I see that’s good so let me show you how to brush. I said that’s for men! He said baby girl I’m going to turn you into the wave queen and everyone will have to bow to you lol. I replied ok….not believing him because what is a wave queen. As time went on my waves got deeper and guys either talked bad about me or wanted me to help them with their hair. Through social media, I met a man name Justin McCommons owner and CEO of Royal Haircare Products. He made me an ambassador for his company. This was in late 2019 early 2020. He taught me techniques and how to properly use his products and they are all natural. By this time I’ve had a few different names until someone said “ooo you’re the Queen B of waving. Sooo from that QueenBWavin was born! Up until 2021, QueenBWavin and Sabrina the model were different pieces of me. My model friends and even designers took to the name QueenBWavin on the modeling side too so I combined my worlds and I just use QueenBWavin. She’s someone I knew I needed just didn’t know how to find her. She’s fearless and daring. She’s feminine yet strong. She’s beautiful but can be a little rough. She’s extremely confident in her body and who she is! She has tough skin and will always stand up for herself! She is me! My parents always made sure I kept a good head and a smart heart!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hello! My name is Sabrina Whipple. I’m 36 years old. I’m single with no kids. Never been married. I’m originally from Danville, Virginia but I currently live in Yanceyville, NC by way of Raleigh/Durham and Greensboro, NC. I used to sell body butter, body wash and hair butter but modeling has definitely picked up and left me little to no time to dedicate to the product side of my business. I may pick up later but right now my main focus is my modeling career! I’m 5’4 and plus size with waves. Not really heard or in the modeling world from what I’ve seen so far. So I definitely use that as fuel to keep pushing and busting down barriers! I never gave up and I didn’t allow the naysayers and haters block my vision! I’m walking in LA Fashion Week Festival in March so I’m super excited!!! This is only the beginning!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I first cut my hair, I was told that I was crazy, I was going through a midlife crisis (age 31) and that I was ugly and no man would date me. These men would say my haircut was for men only. My face is too fat. Every time I would hear this, it was fuel to keep pushing and I knew I couldn’t give up! Sometimes I cried and I would get frustrated. But I never stopped! Today those same people and those same men, they praise me and share my content on social media and want to be in my circle!! “Back then they didn’t want me, now I’m hot they all on me”
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I always thought my most support would come from my friends and family and my hometown……WRONG! Sadly and excitingly, strangers or people that I don’t normally talk to have supported me quicker than my own family and close friends! It was a blow to my heart to be honest! I started to look at life completely different and it has given me an interesting outlook on life ahead!
