We were lucky to catch up with Sabrina The Bruja recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sabrina, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I was the human canvas as part of the End Violence campaign by Charles Gitnick. I clutched an assault rifle to my body, the paint camouflaging the weapon into my silhouette, to demonstrate how closely we carry the burdens of gun violence with us. Months prior to this project, a family member fell victim to an armed robbery in Haiti. The performance was a statement, from a pro-gun rights standpoint, that action needs to be taken to regulate gun control.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I pride myself in being a jack of all trades after creating several set designs, murals and digital works for clients while experimenting with various materials in my studio. My largest set build was a COD: Zombies inspired haunted maze for a local wynwood venue that featured 5 interactive window frames, where the wooden boards were ripped off by zombies. My first mural, co-created with Kyle J. Lago, was inspired by the GTA: Vice City loading screens and is featured in the same venue. My favorite digital commission is the cover of Voice of G’s Ambitious Mortal EP because it tested my technique in achieving the impressionistic realism style I aimed for.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am simulatenously working on my art career and academic career with plans to combine them in the future as an art therapist. Inspired by my own mental health journey, I hope to help others heal from their struggles within.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
Being able to hear how others genuinely perceive my art is one of the most rewarding experiences of being a creative. An authentic interpretation can open the doors into someone’s mind and soul. I’ve found that sharing the personal meaning afterwards and comparing explanations has helped me create bonds with others and has even guided them to look for ways to express their own experiences.
