We were lucky to catch up with Sabrina Sweet recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina , thanks for joining us today. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
With the work I do (lymphatic drainage massages), I can feel when one holds tension/stress/emotions in their body. Along side poor eating habits, gut issues, autoimmune, pms, and many more…. stress is the number one thing I feel in most of my clients which can result in more significant illnesses later on.
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve given to clients dealing with stress in today’s world is to focus on what they can control and to practice letting go of what they cannot control. Stress often arises from feeling overwhelmed by circumstances beyond our influence, leading to physical and mental tension that can contribute to illness and disease.
Here’s the advice I typically offer:
1. Identify What You Can Control: I encourage clients to make a list of things they have control over in their lives, such as their reactions, choices, priorities, and self-care routines. This helps them realize that they have agency over certain aspects of their lives despite external pressures.
2. Accept What You Can’t Control: I then help clients recognize that there are certain things beyond their control, such as other people’s actions, global events, or unforeseen circumstances. I encourage them to accept these realities and focus their energy on managing their own responses rather than trying to change things they cannot.
3. Practice Mindfulness & Relaxation Techniques: I love to give my clients homework and introduce them to mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or other relaxation techniques to help them release physical tension and cultivate a sense of calm amidst stressors.
4. Develop Healthy Coping Strategies: I also encourage clients to engage in activities that promote relaxation and well-being, such as exercise, spending time in nature (grounding in grass or sand is my favorite), pursuing hobbies, or connecting with loved ones. These activities can then help reduce stress levels and build resilience over time.
5. Trust the Process (I LIVE BY THIS SAYING): I remind clients that life is full of uncertainties and challenges, but that they have the capacity to adapt and grow through difficult times while also encouraging them to trust in their own resilience and the natural flow of life, even when things seem uncertain or overwhelming.
and lastly…
6. Seek Support When Needed: I highly highly encourage clients to reach out for support from friends, family, or mental health professionals when they’re feeling overwhelmed by stress. Having a strong support network can provide perspective, validation, and practical assistance during challenging times. Sometimes the simple act of expressing your emotions or needs/wants can help your body release so much (and can help with drainage of toxins as well).
By letting go of what we cannot control and learning to trust the process, clients can reduce their stress levels and cultivate greater resilience in navigating the complexities of today’s world. This approach can help them minimize the negative impact of stress on their physical and mental health, leading to a greater sense of well-being and fulfillment.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi friends, my name is Sabrina Sweet (also known as Miss Lymph) and I’m a lymphatic drainage specialist based in LA. I grew up dancing professionally my whole life, so going into a different profession and it having to do with the human body was right up my alley as I had to be so in tune with my own body as a dancer. I got into lymphatic massages in 2018 and worked for a spa for a couple years until COVID occurred and everything shut down.
At this time in my life, I was trying to save for my wedding… so I wanted to still work so that I could have the wedding of my dreams. I ended up turning the extra room in my apartment into a little massage room and was taking clients there until things opened up again. (I laugh about this now since in my head that was only going to be a couple weeks, but then COVID and the lockdown obviously lasted much longer than we all anticipated haha)
While it truly was a tough time in so many ways and for so many people, my little secret massage side hustle was slowly turning into a business. Things were shut down for so long, yet so many people still needed lymphatic massages so for many reasons (it boosts your immune system, it calms the nervous system, it releases toxic fluid and inflammation from your body and so much more). Clients needed me and I was happy to put myself “at risk” to help others. The more clients I worked on, the more intuitive I had become. And obviously we had nothing but time during COVID, so I took time to call lymphatic doctors, lymphatic specialists, read books about lymph, read and learn about all the different types of lymph…
I WANTED TO LEARN ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING ABOUT THE LYMPH SYSTEM AND THATS THAT I DID!
Fast forward a bit, that relationship/marriage didn’t work out unfortunately, however, my business (Miss Lymph) at that point started taking off very quickly. It definitely taught me a lot in a very short amount of time…. starting a business on my own, planning a wedding, getting married, getting divorced, moving about 4 times, moving offices 3 times, learning about social media, trying to hide my pain, trying to heal, focusing on my health…. all while working on multiple clients a day.
BUT, I would not change a thing! It was all perfect and made for me. I’m a big believer in things happen for a reason! We go through things in our life to learn and to grow and in hopes to help and inspire others. So if anyone can learn anything from my story… it’s to listen to your heart and go after things you want most in life!
I love that I went through all of that while starting my business because now a lot of my service involves an emotional and spiritual take on lymphatic drainage which I believe sets me a part from the rest. It also inspired a lot of my what my brand is today and the exciting new things I’m currently working on – which you’ll have to follow along my journey to see what’s next =]
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Definitely by taking a risk and taking clients at a time I wasn’t suppose to (COVID). Also I am a big believer in you attract who you are… and I genuinely care so much about my clients and their health. I think between that and providing a safe/open space is crucial. I also got to learn a lot about instagram and how to get myself out there more. I wanted a way to make health (lymph health specifically) fun and desirable, so I definitely take pride in the look and feel of my page and the way we make wellness into art. It has definitely come a long way since I started though… I feel that the brand needed a change when I was personally going through a change, as if it’s an extension of me. But that part is definitely a lot of fun and I can’t wait for more changes and upgrades as myself and Miss Lymph continues to grow!
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
10000% over and over again. It’s actually funny, because if you would have asked me what I wanted to do like 7/8 years ago I would have said that I wanted to open a dance studio as that was my career most of my young adult life. Dance was my passion! It’s just so crazy how quickly things can pivot and change. Like now that I’m doing massage… I know for a fact that it’s my purpose. I love helping people, I love making people feel their best, I love creating genuine relationships with my clients, I just love it and I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I’m so excited for what’s to come and what we’ve been working on to grow the brand and the awareness around lymphatic massage and the lymph system even more. Lets just say I’m working on something that can combine my passion (dance) and my purpose (massage)!
