We recently connected with Sabrina Shumaker and have shared our conversation below.
Sabrina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
When I was 22 years old, I was going to school for elementary education. Rushing to finish school assignments and other responsibilities so that I can create art was the norm every single day, but I never questioned if it were a plausible path. That is, until I met a wonderful artist in Orlando who made a living off of her art. I began to research and watch videos online of other artists explaining their process and their ways of funding their craft and reading books and engulfing myself with every aspect of the art career. From photography to sales to marketing, to the actual creation process and techniques and branding. I was so in love! I knew art was always my biggest passion in life and I delved myself head first, engaging in the local community. Soon thereafter, I started getting jobs here and there and putting my all into it. Experimentation with different streams of revenue led me to find what the spaces where I really loved were, and then I became a selective to the things that brought me the most joy. In the beginning, indulgence in my passion was key and I definitely also tried to use as much resources around me as I could to make that dream a reality.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a visual artist that focuses primarily on the human form. I am drawn to portraiture and figures in dreamy environments, using natural elements. The mediums in which I create are murals, paintings, and sculptures. I love creating spaces that feel brighter and more dreamy using these mediums. I love exploring color, compositions and mediums and use a wide variety of mediums such as wood, ceramic, oil paint, and acrylic to bring ideas to life.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The community is the most rewarding aspect to being a creative. My favorite thing to do is to go to art shows and events to talk with creatives and non-creatives alike. From sharing techniques, to getting inspiration, to bonding over art related topics. Every time I spend time with other creatives it inspires me to push my craft further.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal for myself is to go further and deeper in my own journey. It means pushing myself every single time to create something stronger than before. It’s an intrinsic need to improve that drives me to keep showing up, every single day. It’s the ultimate self care to dedicate myself to my craft. It’s a constant reminder to myself that I am showing up, wholeheartedly, to something that I care about and not giving up through the ups and downs. While the goal with every single piece may vary, the one thing that doesn’t change is the desire to create with my entire heart and soul.
