We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sabrina Richardson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Absolutely, I wish I started my creative career sooner. Looking back, I realize the immense passion I had for photography from a young age. Starting earlier would have allowed me to express myself creatively, and given me the confidence to trust my instincts and not succumb to external opinions advising me to take a different path would have empowered me to follow my true calling more assertively. Nonetheless, every step has its own lessons, and I’ve grown from those experiences, shaping me into the photographer I am today.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Sabrina, a passionate and dedicated photographer specializing in both branding and wedding photography. My journey into the world of photography began with a profound love for storytelling through images. Initially, I honed my skills by capturing the beauty in everyday moments, and as my passion grew, I decided to channel it into a professional career.
In my photography business, Mak Polny Photo, I offer a range of services tailored to meet the unique needs of my clients. For branding, I work closely with businesses to create compelling visual narratives that enhance their identity and resonate with their target audience. On the wedding photography front, I approach each celebration with an artist’s eye, preserving the magic and emotion of the day. From candid moments to editorial portraits, I aim to create a timeless visual narrative that couples can cherish for a lifetime. I bring out the authenticity and uniqueness of each client, and celebrate every person, connection, and experience throughout the session.
What sets me apart is my commitment to personable, adventurous, and exciting tone in my work. I believe that photography is not just about capturing moments but also about creating an atmosphere where my clients feel comfortable, allowing their true personalities to shine. I take immense pride in the ability to connect with my clients on a personal level. Understanding their vision, needs, and preferences is so special to me, and this collaboration is what fuels the success of every project.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that my work goes beyond just taking pictures. It’s about crafting visual stories that evoke emotion, capture authenticity, and leave a lasting impression. I’m not just a photographer; I’m a storyteller, and I’m excited to embark on creative journeys with those who resonate with my approach. Whether you’re looking to elevate your brand’s visual identity or document the most important moments of your life, I’m here to transform your vision into stunning visual stories. Let’s create something extraordinary together.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
One aspect that creatives and non-creatives alike might find challenging about the creative journey is the intricate between passion, vulnerability, and self-discovery. Creativity often involves putting a piece of oneself into the work, and embracing the uncertainty of self-expression. The process isn’t always linear, and the journey is as much about self-discovery and growth as it is about the final product. Some may might struggle to comprehend the emotional investment that goes into each creation, the constant pursuit of improvement, and the courage required to share something deeply personal with the world. The highs of creative satisfaction and the lows of self-doubt are all a part of the journey, creating a delicate dance that shapes you as an artist. For me, finding beauty or meaning in the mundane, ordinary aspects of life is something thats come naturally, it’s a continuous and unique exploration of the world, often guided by passion and the desire to communicate, provoke thought, and inspire. It’s not just about creating something aesthetically pleasing; it’s a constant process of self-discovery and a reflection of the artist’s evolving identity.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One big lesson I had to shake off was the idea that there’s only one way to succeed in my creative journey. Initially, I thought there was this clear roadmap everyone followed to be successful, and being creative was not a part of most maps. I was stressing about not hitting certain milestones, not enjoying “normal” jobs, or pursuing a degree. I got pretty caught up in comparing myself to others, especially my peers. For a long time, it felt like I was just ticking boxes to meet some external idea of success. The lightbulb moment happened when I realized that creativity doesn’t fit into a one-size-fits-all mold, and success looks different for everyone. Letting go of the idea that there’s a fixed path allowed me to appreciate my own unique journey and find joy in the process. Now, I understand that success is a personal thing, and it’s about my growth and the connections I make through my work. It’s less about hitting certain goals and more about enjoying the ride and figuring out what success means to me.
