Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sabrina Kumal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sabrina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
For me, my hero(s) are my parents and there are many reasons for that. For one, they have been there for me since the beginning of time and continue to be there for me through and through. I am very fortunate to have been given the many wonders of life through their hard work and sacrifices. They have always treated me with the utmost love and care; the kind that is the perfect fertilizer to help one’s child grow substantially. My parents never made me fit a “mold”. They always gave freedom for creativity and self-exploration; to let me discover what my truest passions are in this world full of endless possibilities. And with that, I found my way into the Beauty and Education realm.
My family has a history of being self-employed, and that has inspired me greatly. It takes a great deal to break from status-quo and jump into something completely different; something that is your own. With that, they have taught me that sometimes you need to take that risk to fulfill your dreams and achieve your goals. I’ve also learned that to achieve anything in this world, you need to be ready to put in the hard work and effort. That you need to live by dedication, ambition, and perseverance. And most of all, patience. Patience is usually always overlooked when starting something from scratch; we immediately look for results, when ‘results’ is something that takes time to come to fruition.
They are my biggest supporters in this journey of mine and I couldn’t be more grateful. I am blessed to be surrounded by their endless motivation, encouragement, and words of wisdom. All in all, they have influenced me to follow my dreams, and to also be confident and believe in myself; AND THAT will take me far.

Sabrina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, my name is Sabrina Kumal and I am the Owner of Glam Hour Salon & Spa. My passion for the beauty industry began when my eldest sister went to college to study Fashion & Retail Merchandising. How, you may ask? My sister and I are attached at the hip (fun fact: she is the Co-Owner to Glam Hour Salon & Spa), and I would stay with her in her bedroom while she would complete her assignments. A popular one was watching episodes of ‘What Not to Wear’ and when it got to the salon makeover segments, it would captivate me. They helped people configure looks to fit them just right, and most important, help them feel good in their own skin! That was my deal breaker. Plus, they looked super cool cutting those wispy layers with confidence!
Here at Glam Hour, we offer a wide variety of services from Hair, Skin Nails, Bridal, and Fashion! So that includes, haircuts, hair color, facials, makeup applications, gel nails and more! We even have the Japanese Head Spa! My sister also offers the infamous Color Analysis Service here! Just in case you aren’t quite aware of what a Color Analysis is, it is a service meant to determine your correct color palette to help enhance your beautiful features and body shape.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I truly am passionate about the industry, and my heart is 110% in it to help others and serve my community. Going to a salon is not just about getting dolled up; for some people it’s a mini therapy session or helping one feel good by getting a haircut that suits their face shape, or getting their hair colored the right shade to contrast perfectly with their skin tone. Here I can only speak for myself, but I truly feel my salon has character and is an inviting space for all ages, races, and gender. We have a relaxed, home-type of environment, so clients can feel comfortable. As a courtesy, we offer our guests Coffee, Tea, Water or Wine.
I am most proud of building this business from scratch with my sister, and making it a space to welcome all in. That I took a leap of faith to become my own boss, and going through the entire learning process of building a successful business. I want my clients to know that I always give a personable experience, to make them feel relaxed and comfortable in my chair and will always get the best service possible. And that, I will always make sure they leave my salon feeling happy.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I would have to say what illustrates my resilience is growing this business from scratch and building a whole new clientele from scratch. It is very easy to just give up, but I have learned that if you keep striving for what you want, you will achieve it. My team of supporters have also impacted my resilience throughout my journey by encouraging me to NEVER give up. No matter how many hardships I have faced in this journey, I know that I am on the right path, and this business is meant for me. Aside from resilience, it makes you gain character, makes you humbler, and overall builds your business on a strong foundation. So, for all those who are just starting out, or have hit a curve in their journey, from one business owner to another, please DO NOT give up. Perseverance will conquer all.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think non-creatives will struggle to understand what it’s like to build a book based on your unique skills and talents. In an ordinary job, you have clients ranging in a wide variety. For example, at a coffee shop, you get anyone that’s looking for a quick breakfast rush, or a brunch hangout. Whereas, in a personal service profession (i.e. salon setting), you need to build a clientele that is geared toward your personality, skills, and talents. It takes time to build that specific clientele, and it requires a lot of patience, and resilience. Even if you get a client, it doesn’t guarantee that they will return. Sometimes it doesn’t have to do with your service, but sometimes the stylist and client just didn’t click, and that’s okay. Being in the beauty profession requires a special artistic ability, and every stylist has their own flare with their creativity. Therefore, every stylist will attract different clientele, with personalities across the board. All in all, I think non-creatives don’t really understand what it’s like to build a strong clientele that is structured specifically to their business and their employees because their profession isn’t based on personality, and skill.
