We recently connected with Sabrina Krause and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Being a freelance artist for 16 years has its ups and downs. There are definitely days, years, (the pandemic) that are harder and better than others. Mostly I love that I set my own hours, I can vacation when I want, volunteer when I want and never have to miss a field trip, class project or random weekday event with my kids. On the downside there is no sick pay, paid vacation, regular income and I work almost every weekend. SO I do day dream sometimes what life would be like working a 9-5 M-F. However, nothing beats the AMAZING humans I meet at every job. I am making constant connections, and learning so much about all different walks of life with people I admire and adore. No 9-5 would give me the kind of variety I get with my freelance career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am 37 years old and have been a freelance artist since I was 21. Originally I was set on going to California and schooling at The Mudd. To of course be a movie makeup artist. God had other plans and blessed me with an AMAZING son that kept me close to home and starting my career in MN. While I originally thought I wanted to work in the commercial/tv world, I quickly realized with my own family I needed work life balance. To have that I needed to switch gears a bit. So I started focusing on the growing wedding industry, and airbrush tanning. My oldest sister is a cosmetologist and so she really helped me start my business by sending all her clients my way. The wedding industry was growing rapidly and I began working with companies as an independent contractor. Over the years I have gone from doing 10-15 weddings a year to now on average between 60 and 70. I have been working with PrimpedMN since 2015 and they have by far been the best company as an independent contractor. I am loyal to them and they fully support me in my personal growing business of airbrush tanning and now teeth whitening as well! For me it’s about full service for my brides! I truly love being a part of their special day and hope to only make the process less stressful and more fun. I like to offer organic spray tans and teeth whitening because of how it truly can boost your confidence from the inside out! Its such a mood lifter and as a bride or bridesmaid, even mom you should always feel and look your best for a special day. These photos sometimes stay on your walls for a lifetime. After 16 years of ups and downs, good years and bad years, working with 3 different companies and doing a variety of jobs from print to film to weddings to fashion I can truly say I have a great balance. I love my career and every client ends up giving more to me than I do to them. I always hope that I am making a positive impact on everyone I come into contact with. That being said I am searching for a part time job with a non-profit organization that I can offer my skills to in the future. I would love to have larger impact in the world and fill my bucket in an additional way while also giving back more! I will never likely give up weddings because they are such a joy for me but I wouldn’t mind having something else during the week to enjoy more Saturdays off with my family.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Looking forward I think my mission is to continue to do what I love and share my skills to build self esteem in a more impactful way is what’s driving me. My ultimate goal is to somehow find a place that allows me to be creative, share my skills, but also work more with a non profit capacity. I love the wedding industry but finding something to compliment my life in a part time form that helps me support my family while helping others is a needed addition for me in my current life stage. I am searching to do less on the weekends so I can free up some much needed family time while also filling my need to serve others in the community. I truly have no idea what this is or where it will take me but know that there is something out there I just have to find the right place!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Back in 2012 I went through a divorce that was unexpected. Working in the wedding industry then was one of the hardest commitments personally. I had to face my own marriage falling apart while still being present for my brides. There came a point where I had a harsh realization that I was failing miserably and needed to step away from weddings. It was the HARDEST decision of my life. I took almost a full year off, worked on myself, went back to school for a bit and worked odd commercial jobs to stay busy. During that time not only did I grow exponentially as a person but also as an artist. When I did come back to weddings not only was I more present I was a better student, better teacher, more humble and more self aware. That year off was the best decision I could have made for myself and for my career. It caused me to self reflect and refocus my goals. I learned that you can never stop learning, or growing and that everyone has an invisible struggle and needs a lot of grace. Not everything is personal and people make mistakes including myself.
