We were lucky to catch up with Sabrina K. Garba recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sabrina, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
As a strategic communications firm focused on global and cross-cultural communications, our team spends a lot of our time turning culturally conscious data and sentiments into strategies, initiatives, and messages that address critical communications, engagement, and societal challenges. That means our projects are often very analytical and metrics-driven. However, as a team, we are deeply multi-hyphenated and multi-cultural, and while our client work often requires left-brain thinking, we each have the desire to create from our right-brain through free forms of creative expression and collaboration that pull on our cross-cultural experiences. As a result, we spend a lot of our time developing in-house impact initiatives centered around storytelling, art, music, well-being, and community. In traditional corporate culture, it’s rare to experience this type of flexibility. Organizational roles are often split, labeling individuals as analytical or creative. But, over the years I’ve recognized that allowing our team members to experiment with the full scope of their interests at work creates a greater sense of fulfillment and belonging. By making space for each one of us to leverage the full spectrum of our talent for good within the same organization I’ve noticed more meaningful collaborations and approaches to our client work and relationships that acknowledge the full human experience, giving us a more holistic perspective on how we can inspire change within in ourselves and individuals across the globe.
Sabrina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a global citizen born in Brooklyn and raised between New York and Nevada, shaped by a diverse family background and early experiences with advocacy for gender equality. At Howard University, I began using my voice to raise awareness about cultural issues and women’s rights, later earning a Masters in Public Relations from Georgetown University. Following burnout in my early career, I embarked on transformative sabbaticals in Brazil, sparking the founding of Glass Ladder Group, where I advise high-net-worth leaders and organizations on purpose-driven initiatives and storytelling. Concurrently, I lead Honey Hive, a women’s leadership community fostering connection and empowerment through various events and initiatives. My approach blends cultural insights with business psychology to drive positive change, emphasizing holistic well-being alongside professional success. I’m proud to inspire and empower others through my work, striving to make a meaningful impact on individuals and communities worldwide.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I started my business at 25 years old, I had no idea what I was doing. Within the first six months, I went from launching to running a six-figure business with no experience. The stress and the responsibility knocked me back, and I quickly began to see my mental, emotional, and physical health deteriorate. Within two years, I’d triggered an auto-immune response in my body that landed me in bed for over two months with little support. I had lost momentum and my confidence. Over the next, 7 years or so, I committed to investing in critical business learning while rebuilding my confidence as a business owner and public speaker. Present day, I am grateful for almost ten years of lessons that have helped me to approach the challenges of business with more wisdom, focus, optimism, and community while building a committed team and reputable client list with strong relationships.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Most of my clients have come as a result of deep relationships that have been developed over time. This has helped me to truly understand their interests and what’s important to them both professionally and personally, which gives me the opportunity to invited them to do things that we truly enjoy together. This might include participating in non-profit efforts, or attending one of my personal impact events that include community hikes, variety shows, and co-working sessions. Being able to create dynamic relationships with my clients that centers their professional development and well being has not just created brand loyalty, it has also created a sense of community and connection that leads to more effective collaboration, incredible referrals and advocacy.
