We were lucky to catch up with Sabrina Hammonds recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sabrina , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
To understand how I came to be in the podcast booking business, you’d need a little background. The same year I resigned from teaching in an elementary classroom, I felt the Lord calling me to start a business. Now, keep in mind, I had no intention of starting a business, nor did I have a business background. I simply wanted to leave teaching to be more present with my family.
After wrestling with the idea of starting a business for a few weeks, I decided to take action and begin with the skills I had. I thought, “I’ve acquired a lot of administrative skills over the years. Perhaps I’ll start with that.” After doing some research online, I found a course that would walk me through, step by step, how to start a virtual assistant business. It was my very first investment in starting a business.
Within a few months, I officially launched what I called Sabrina’s Consulting Services. I chose a name I could grow into because I didn’t know exactly what the business would become—I just knew I had to start.
Fast forward to my first client: I was doing administrative work for her jewelry business. As we got to know each other, I discovered some deep and personal parts of her story and testimony. That’s when a shift began to take place in my business.
Her story had such an impact on me that I told her she needed to be speaking, and I wanted to help her make it happen. I offered to assist her with something I had no knowledge of simply because of the impact she had on me and my passion for testimonies.
I felt nervous, scared, and excited all at the same time when she agreed to share her story and let me help. I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” But then I heard the still, small voice of my Heavenly Father say, “It’s okay, this is the direction we’re going in.”
From there, my business shifted from virtual assistant work to podcast booking services—at a time when I didn’t even know what a podcast was. I had a passion for stories and testimonies, a heart to serve, a willingness to learn, and the Lord’s guidance. That was more than enough for me to step fully into the role of an entrepreneur and visibility booking agent.
I started with a Google search: “How are people sharing their message? Where are people speaking?” That’s when I discovered podcasts were a significant platform for speakers. Who knew? Not me. This was all new territory.
Once I figured out the “where,” I had to figure out the “how.” How was I going to get my client booked on podcasts when I had no connections, no large following, and neither did she? I had to research which podcasts fit her and how to contact them.
I began sending emails to podcast hosts, “pitching” her before I even knew what a pitch template was. I simply shared her heart and message, explaining the value she could bring to their platform. To my surprise, hosts responded with yeses all over the place. An inexperienced, brand-new entrepreneur with no podcast knowledge was suddenly booking podcasts!
I was, as they say, building the plane while flying it. That first client shared about our work with a friend, who then asked me, “Can I pay you to do this for me, too?” That’s when this started to feel like a real business.
Although I was still learning, I took on more clients and went from 1 to 6 in just a few months. Now, 4+ years later, I’ve served about 40 clients. It all began with a passion, an incredible testimony, and a willingness to step into the unknown.
Sabrina , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I feel like the previous question covers a lot of this, but I’ll share a little more about who I am.
I’m a wife, mother, and passionate follower of Christ. My husband and I have been married for 13 years (as of 2024), and we have 4 amazing children and a beautiful daughter-in-law.
Before starting my business, I worked in various customer service roles, including restaurants, retail, and, most recently, as a 4th-grade teacher. In 2020, I resigned from teaching to spend more time with my family. At the time, I thought I might watch children at home to earn some money, but God had other plans.
Soon after leaving teaching, I felt the Lord leading me to start a business. I resisted at first, thinking, “I’m a teacher, not a businesswoman.” But after weeks of prayer and wrestling, I stepped out in faith.
I invested in a course to start a virtual assistant business and launched shortly after. Over time, God led me into the podcasting space, and Kingdom Connections Podcast & Media Agency was born.
At our agency, we empower transformational leaders to amplify their reach and impact by securing podcast interviews, media features, and speaking opportunities. We help them connect with their ideal audience through tailored visibility strategies, message refinement, and authentic engagement.
Our clients see increased brand recognition, stronger audience connections, and measurable growth in their influence and income. But more than that, this work is about advancing God’s Kingdom. It’s about helping leaders steward the message God has entrusted to them and make a lasting cultural and Kingdom impact.
The world needs your story, your message, and the transformation you bring. There are people praying and waiting for you to show up. Take the next step toward elevating your message today.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I have found that serving others well has been the most effective strategy for growing clientele. I had no idea how I was going to “get” clients when I first started out and even after 4 years of being in business, almost 95% of clients have come from referrals, introductions, and previous connections. So, I’ve had to figure out what am I doing that I may not know I’m doing. Here’s what I’ve found to be true:
People want to feel seen, heard, and valued as individuals. Go the extra mile for your clients so they feel like you see them. It goes a long way. Over the years, I’ve added some different things to our process in order to personalize what we do. At first, it was just a birthday card. Then, I added a client welcome box, so that every new client receives a gift when we start together with a personalized note. Because I absolutely love the stories and testimonies of others, I deep dive into every client’s message, mission, and story so that it’s as if I’m reaching out as them, with their heart. One of the most precious compliments I’ve received from a podcast host is that they could really tell that I knew our client’s message and that I really believed in it.
Another thing that I’ve picked up on is the impact of over-delivering. You can overdeliver without giving away services for free. If you think about how you would want to be treated as a customer or client, you will find a way to go the extra mile. I like to make sure that the services we provide don’t add to our clients’ already full load, so we take care of the entire booking process from start to finish. We fill out all the forms, book the interview, track the air date, follow up, and more. This frees them up to show up and share the message confidently.
Even as the agency continues to grow, these are two areas that I will continue to keep in mind because this has been the biggest producer of clients. Provide a service for them that they will share about whether they’re an official referral partner or not. Your previous clients become your unofficial ambassadors. I have developed a referral system because I want to give back to our clients and thank them for sending more clients my way.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I have learned that just because there are business “experts” who seem to have the “right” strategies, it doesn’t mean those strategies are the ones for you. Just because they work for one doesn’t mean they work for all.
When I first launched my business, I had heard that in order to grow an audience, you had to connect with X number of people each day, have so many calls per week, and add all these people to your community each week. Well, I started off doing just that. I would go through the suggested connections, and add up to 10 people per day. I would find at least 5 people that I could have a “chat” with per week. I was adding so many people to my network and having calls all the time. You would think that with that many connections, there would be many opportunities to follow. This was not the case for me. I was feeling icky adding all those people in a way that felt random. I was exhausted from having calls and chats with so many different people. For me, connecting with others is always relational and personal, not transactional. I want to take the time to hear from them, get to know them, and be present in the moment. For me to stay true to who I am and how I build relationships with others, I had to scale it back to something much more manageable. I needed to build fewer relationships at a slower pace over time. Those relationships have multiplied by more than I can even quantify. They have led to so many new clients, collaborations, and opportunities over the years. Had a listened and stayed the course in the beginning, I may have reached some very large numbers, but with very little fruit to show from it. They would just be numbers, not people. This is something that has continued to guide the business: Quality vs. Quantity and Relational not Transactional. These are foundational pillars that Kingdom Connections Podcast & Media Agency is built upon.
