We were lucky to catch up with Sabrina Espinal recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sabrina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
In 2009, I began exploring social media, feeling ready to transition away from my career in Human Resources. However, the marketing department in the business I worked for, didn’t take me seriously. Sadly, that same year, I lost my Mom, and everything changed. It was then that I decided to take a chance on this new thing called social media.
My first client came unexpectedly. I reached out to a friend who connected me with a new store owner, and I was hired to handle their social media on the spot. I panicked—I had nothing in place. No company name, website, or business cards. I didn’t have a system to invoice, and more. I truly hit the ground running.
It was nervous chaos, Fortunately, I discovered Mari Smith and followed her. I also found online social media training and business training through a friend who was starting her own business. I dived into all the training and support.
From there, I began creating social media for small storefronts in my city.
My journey may not be unique, but I launched my business before having anything in place because a good friend brought me my first client!
Sabrina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I specialize in creatively supporting small businesses and single entrepreneurs by crafting tailored content and managing their social networks to foster community engagement.
One of the key elements I bring to my clients is peace of mind. They trust in my creative and unique approach, knowing that I work as a caring partner who is deeply invested in their business and brand. This level of commitment is rare and invaluable.
When it comes to managing comments, I go beyond just responding—I make their fans feel seen and appreciated. This personalized touch sets my services apart and strengthens the bond between my clients and their audience.
Navigating social media is hard. It’s a complex and it changes every day. Anyone can post something, but is it the right image, at the right time, with the right lighting? Is it shared across networks effectively? Should it include music? Where did the image come from?
The list goes on. There are countless factors to consider before hitting “post,” especially when representing another person’s company, brand, or reputation. Success requires a blend of on-going education, skill, knowledge, technique, and careful planning. And that’s where my expertise shines.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Whether it’s a team member or an employee of a client, the key to working with anyone and fostering good morale is to take a moment and find out how the other person is doing. Have a real conversation and share something about yourself. Then working together feels good and connected.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I definitely had to unlearn being so proper and so corporate. The way I talked, wrote, thought. You see, I entered the corporate world out of college and while that still is a part of the way I think, I had to learn to just be still and embrace the single entrepreneur life and my client’s life. It really did end up being the best of both worlds and a great match for my clients and myself.
