We were lucky to catch up with Sabrina Campa recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sabrina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
A significant risk I took was the decision to pivot from being a mixed media artist to diving into the world of esthetics and eventually opening my own business, Dark Joy. My artistic journey started with various forms of creative expression, from painting to aerial dancing. Each medium allowed me to explore and expand my creative boundaries. However, I found myself seeking a new outlet, something that would allow me to blend my love for art with a more personal and transformative experience.
At the time, I was working at a spa, immersing myself in the world of beauty and self-care. The idea of beauty as an art form began to captivate me, and that’s when I decided to take a leap of faith. I enrolled in beauty school, where I dove into the esthetics industry, learning everything I could about the craft. Simultaneously, I worked with a lash company, helping them develop products and training, which further deepened my passion and expertise.
Upon graduation, the real risk presented itself: opening my own business. I knew I wanted to create something unique, something that combined beauty with an artistic eye, but the uncertainty of venturing out on my own was daunting. Despite the fears and challenges, I decided to go for it, founding Dark Joy. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. I’m continually learning and evolving, and I’m grateful every day for the risk I took. That risk has allowed me to blend my love for art with the transformative power of beauty.
Sabrina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey there! I’m the creative mind behind Dark Joy, a place where beauty and art come together to create something truly special. My journey into the esthetics world began when I was working at a spa and discovered that beauty could be just as expressive and transformative as any art form. That realization led me to beauty school, where I soaked up everything I could about the industry. I’ve always been passionate about pushing creative boundaries, and that passion now fuels everything we do at Dark Joy.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is the ability to transform ideas into tangible, beautiful realities. Whether it’s through mixed media art or in the esthetics industry, the process of creation is deeply fulfilling. In my work at Dark Joy, I love seeing the immediate impact my services have on clients, the way their confidence is boosted and how they feel empowered after a session. It’s a unique privilege to help people see the beauty in themselves, and that’s what drives me every day.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
To best support artists and creatives, society needs to recognize the value of creativity in all its forms. This means not only appreciating art and creative work but also investing in the infrastructure that allows creativity to thrive. Providing accessible education and resources for aspiring artists, supporting small businesses like Dark Joy, and fostering a culture that values originality and innovation are crucial. When we invest in the creative community, we enrich our culture and make space for new, transformative ideas to flourish.
