Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sabrina. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sabrina, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
My very first client was a childhood friend of mine, someone I’ve known since my days as a dancer. At the time, I had just announced the launch of my event planning business, and she had recently found out she was pregnant. When she reached out to me, it felt like the perfect opportunity to combine my passion for event planning with something deeply personal. She asked me to plan and execute her gender reveal, and I couldn’t have been more excited.
It was such a special moment—helping a lifelong friend celebrate such a joyous occasion while also marking the beginning of my new business. That experience not only gave me the chance to showcase my skills but also solidified my love for creating meaningful and memorable events. It was the perfect start to my journey as an event planner, and I’ll always cherish that first milestone.
SAbrina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, my name is Sabrina, and I am an entrepreneur with a deep passion for exploring diverse avenues and creating meaningful experiences. Throughout my journey, I’ve had the incredible blessing of pursuing many different paths, each of which has contributed to who I am today.
I began by writing a book titled Taking My Body Back, which is a deeply personal and empowering reflection on self-love, body positivity, and the journey toward reclaiming confidence. From there, I ventured into plus-size modeling, a role that allowed me to embrace my unique beauty and celebrate diversity in the fashion industry. I even had the opportunity to walk in a fashion show, an experience that was both exhilarating and empowering.
My journey continued as I went on a book tour, connecting with readers, sharing my story, and inspiring others to embrace their authentic selves. Alongside all of this, I found myself drawn to the world of event planning, which led me to launch my own business, Lavishlee Events. This step was inspired by my mom, an incredible interior designer, who instilled in me a love for creating beautiful, meaningful spaces. Her creativity and attention to detail sparked my own passion for design. Coupled with my natural affinity for administration and organizing, I realized event planning was the perfect blend of both my creative and logistical strengths. With Lavishlee Events, I’ve been able to curate unforgettable experiences, from birthday’s, baby showers, bridal showers, and gala’s to corporate gatherings, that reflect my love for both the artistry and structure behind event planning.
Currently, I am in the midst of launching a new business venture that has been in the works for the past six months. It’s a new chapter that I’m incredibly excited about, and I can’t wait to share it with the world. Each step of my journey has been driven by a desire to challenge myself, break boundaries, and help others in the process. I’m excited for what lies ahead and the opportunity to continue growing and creating in new and inspiring ways.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
When I made the decision to start my business, I was determined not to take out a loan for initial capital. I had been saving for a down payment on a home, but after careful consideration, I chose to invest those funds into my business instead. While it was a significant and risky decision, I had complete confidence in both myself and my vision. I believed that if I wasn’t willing to invest in my own future, no one else would. It was a bold step, but one that has ultimately been rewarding as I continue to build and grow my business.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I launched my business with my first two followers—myself and my mom. In the beginning, I focused on posting consistently and dedicating time to building my portfolio by offering complimentary services. This allowed me to showcase my work and expand my content. To further highlight my inventory, I provided additional services at no charge when clients booked my services. I also utilized my personal social media accounts to share my business, and with the support of my family and friends, who shared my page, I was able to increase visibility and build a foundation for growth.
