We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sabreena Covington. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sabreena below.
Alright, Sabreena thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I lived in Maryland for most of my life. I was undervalued and unfulfilled with my job, but I had been with my company for 20 years. Who leaves a company after being there for 20 years? Well, I did. I didn’t just leave the company, but I left Maryland, my family and my friends and moved to Texas. This was a big, life changing risk. We didn’t know anyone in Texas, but my family and I took a leap of faith.
Even though it appeared, we were moving because I received a new job opportunity, we were really moving because it was part of God’s plan. God had to move me out of a comfortable and familiar environment to see if I would trust Him and this was just the beginning.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
My obedience was about God being able to use me to build His kingdom by helping and encouraging others in this world which led to the creation of Sisters Breaking Chains Together.

Sabreena, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am the Founder & President of Sisters Breaking Chains Together (SBCT) which supports Collin County and the surrounding areas. Our mission is to work with women and girls to break the chains of generational strongholds to renew, redirect, rebuild and restore ourselves, our families and communities. In the fall of 2017, I shared my testimony with a group of women which led to establishing the non-profit a year later. We provide events to strengthen mother and daughter relationships, increase community awareness, increase knowledge and giving back through community services.
Examples:
Mother and Daughter Bible Study, Mother and Daughter Picnic, Human Trafficking, Money Management, Mental Health, Volunteering at Allen Community Outreach in Allen, Volunteering at Feed My Starving Children in Richardson, and Virtual Game Night
During the pandemic, many people felt isolated and alone. As people start to feel more comfortable interacting with others, we would like married moms and single moms with preteen and teens girls to consider being part of the SBCT family. I’m most proud of sharing my testimony, faith (Jesus Christ died for the forgiveness of our sins) and experiences with others. Also, seeing the positive impact SBCT is having on mother and daughter relationships.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Sisters Breaking Chains Together (SBCT) is a faith-based organization. Unfortunately, we have been told “no” by potential partners and sponsors because we are faith-based organization that prays together, studies the Bible together and fellowships together.
During the pandemic, we were able to pivot with virtual events while people were isolated at home. This expanded our reach across the United States. Last year, my daughter and I were featured on WFAA Good Morning Texas during the pandemic to promote Sisters Breaking Chains Together (SBCT). In the fall of 2020, we were featured in the Plano magazine. God continues to open doors for SBCT with some organizations that previous said no and some new organizations as well.
For encouragement, listen to Way Maker by Sinach on YouTube.

Have you ever had to pivot?
During the pandemic, we were able to pivot from in-person, local events to virtual events reaching women and girls across the United States. No one knew how long we were going to be dealing with COVID, so we had to brainstorm about ways to stay connected with current follows while trying to attract new followers during a pandemic. We decided to do a three-part summer series called Mindy, Body and Soul.
Event #1- Abandonment and Rejection- we had a woman share her testimony about being given away by her biological mother at a young age and reconnecting with her before she passed away several years ago.
Event #2- Mental Health- discuss the challenges people were facing during the pandemic and how to handle them.
Event #3- Community and Police- the death of George Floyd happened during the summer. of 2020. We had someone from the police department share challenges communities and the police face every day and how we can try to work together.
We started virtual game night with the preteen and teen girls and they loved it! Some of the moms started attending and playing the games too.
Having these events helped us increase attendance at the annual mother and daughter Bible study because we were intentional about staying in contact with the mothers and the girls during a very challenging time for a lot of people.
This led to receiving grants, increased donations and volunteers for SBCT as we now have a combination of in-person and virtual events.
