We were lucky to catch up with Sabrea Kuderer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sabrea, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I started SIMPLE IN NATURE with the idea that high quality organic skincare products can be affordable and effective. For years I was buying products that were great, but were so expensive. I just couldn’t justify spending the money. I knew I could make products as good, if not better, and not have to charge such high prices.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
SIMPLE IN NATURE was born from a passion for all things natural and nontoxic. It was originally created in 2015 because of a project for a business class I was taking. We were given the freedom to create whatever we wanted which was super exciting for me. I had always dreamed of being an entrepreneur but was too nervous to take the leap. I have been a lover of all things natural for over 20 years and knew I wanted to be in the skincare realm so I started experimenting with various products and fell in love with the entire process.
I started formulating organic soaking salts, sugar scrubs, and body oils. Over time I’ve added in other products to the lineup that complement the original core line, such as lip scrubs, perfume roll ons, and an intimacy oil. Each product is designed to improve your skin’s health and is easy to incorporate into your daily/weekly self-care routine, leaving your skin feeling nourished and soft. My products are made utilizing 99% organic ingredients and only those necessary to make the products effective. I often say “it’s everything your skin needs and nothing it doesn’t, the way mother nature intended.” I truly believe in the importance of developing a consistent routine to ensure we are taking care of our skin to maintain its optimal health.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I am so fortunate to be able to do this job full time! Originally after going through the school project, I decided I was going to start the business as a side hustle, but after getting pregnant with our second kiddo and having an extremely demanding career, I decided to put it on the back burner. My career was in the Consumer Products division for a large live family entertainment company. I had worked with the company for 20 years working my way up from the bottom. In March of 2020 the entertainment industry was completely shut down and I was laid off. I was devastated emotionally and the thought of starting over in a new career just didn’t sound appealing. After weighing all the pros and cons with my husband, we agreed that now was the right time for me to go all in on my business.
Coming into this with all of my years of experience in the corporate world really gave me a huge leg up with starting my own business. I came into this with an understanding of profit margins, pricing, inventory management, visual merchandising, etc. Without this previous experience I know my journey would have been even more challenging. Despite all my knowledge coming into the business there are still plenty of lessons to be learned when you are the sole person making all the decisions and doing all of the work. I am most proud of how we have evolved and grown in such a short period of time. We have added new products to the lineup and went through a whole rebrand. While not easy, everything that has come up has been a needed and a positive change.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building my audience is a daily task. Because we are a small business and don’t have a big budget for advertising, we really have to use some basic grassroots marketing tactics. It started with my personal Facebook page , reaching out to friends and family to let them know about the business and the product offerings. I added a Facebook and Instagram business page and started to share things here and there. At one point I decided to start doing Facebook Lives every Tuesday, dubbed “Hot Tip Tuesday” to help educate people on living a healthier lifestyle. I truly believe that having good skin isn’t just about what we put on our skin, it’s about leading a life that creates wellness from the inside out and the outside in. I knew that if I could share my knowledge of all things health and wellness, that I could start building a bigger community. Showing up consistently each week really helped grow my audience because it built a level of comfort and trust. When I was at in person events, I would connect with as many people as possible and encourage them to sign up for my email list as well as follow me on social media. Making connections and fostering those connections through these various channels has helped create loyal customers and growth through word of mouth. My best advice would be to provide value and be consistent with it!
