We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sable Andrews a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sable, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
As soon as a client reaches out to our studio, I’m invested. I always strive to give each client a custom experience different from each client before them. Every new session is an opportunity for me to give this client a beautiful memory they’ll cherish forever. While I have had the pleasure of working with some really wonderful people, I have had a few clients with whom I’ve really connected and felt they truly appreciated all of the big and little things we include in our sessions. During each client’s consultation, we discuss what their hopes are and if there’s anything specific they would like to include. This really helps us not only find out more, but truly learn what our client would like to achieve with their session. Our goal is to provide a personalized session and let that client know we’re listening to them. While we always incorporate our own style into our photography, we make sure our client’s ideas are represented through our vision.
During one such consultation, a client expressed their desire to include a hunting theme during their session. While this might not be something I would’ve personally included, I wanted to find out why this client desired this theme. This would help me create a set-up as close to the representation of the client’s hopes as possible. As it turns out, the client’s husband and baby’s father was a forester and often hunted personally as well as professionally. This was really important to them as they had experienced a heart-wrenching tragedy not long before their session. I wanted to make sure I went above and beyond to create something they would absolutely adore. I wanted to show them I appreciated their business and I was going to go above and beyond to give them the session they dreamed of.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Harpsy Portraiture is a family-owned photography studio having built our business with a passion for all genres of photography. As a husband and wife duo, we have strived to improve our business through various courses & classes. We have trained in both photojournalism & portrait photography; as well as studio lighting, videography, newborn safety, creative editing, and a plethora of programs we’ve taken to gain knowledge. What sets us apart is truly caring about our clients and their session hopes. I fall in love with each session I capture and want clients to know that their photos are important to me because I’m stopping time to capture a memory. Every moment is brief and I endeavor to capture those memories for them to cherish for a lifetime and more.
We are constantly pushing ourselves to improve and grow our craft. Just recently I signed up to take yet another newborn photography class. This specific photography genre is constantly changing and I always want to provide a luxury experience. We are known for our ongoing pursuit to gain knowledge and improve each client’s portraits.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For as long as I can remember, I have had a vibrant imagination. When I was a child, I was often found daydreaming or creating something. When I became a bit older, I began creating items to sell. Little pieces of this and that I would put together and believe it was truly this amazing creation that others would want to purchase and cherish as much as I did. It wasn’t just the thought of selling items that brought me joy, it was the entire process. This eventually morphed into a love of photography. I wanted to capture a moment and forever ingrain it in someone’s memory. Life was busy, but I knew if I could only take a photo of something, I would forever remember it. I found the aspect of capturing a memory to be more rewarding than any other endeavor I had previously experienced.
Being a creative person, I knew that if I could take my imagination and form it into a business, I would be able to do what I love and earn a living from it. However, the best part of this was knowing that my love of creating something from nothing was giving someone a memory they might not have had otherwise.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I never want to become sedentary. I never want to quit creating. I always want to push myself. These goals are what continue to push me into becoming better with each session I capture. Knowing that my next client will benefit from my continued pursuit of improving myself is what pushes me. When you’re able to look at an image you captured even 1 month ago and notice you’ve improved, this is what drives me. I know that if I continue to grow, I will continue to give my clients an experience they’ll cherish.
