We were lucky to catch up with Saberra Massey Hill recently and have shared our conversation below.
Saberra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
In 2015 is I first originally moved to St. Louis Missouri from Minneapolis Minnesota. I was 25 years old no kids, let me tell you I was living the life. Originally my sister invite me down St. Louis to come and live and she offered to pay for my Phlebotomy course and a local phlebotomy school, it was 6 weeks and a week internship and boom your phlebotomist! Shortly after I took my NHA exam for CPT and passed. Now that I’m a National Certified Phlebotomist I’m looking for my first job and also local to my sisters house because I wasn’t from St. Louis and I rather stayed close to home.
The only thing in the area that was hiring for Phlebotomists was a plasma center about 5 miles away! I was super excited, I remember the night before getting my résumé together and outfit ready because I was determined to get the job..
The next day I went up to the plasma center and asked to fill out an application back then we have paper applications so I filled it out and attached my résumé! I’m literally passed nationals 3 days prior but I was determined to get a job in phlebotomy.
About a week later, I got a phone call from a fabulous and are offering me an interview at the schedule time for me to come in.
The interview went fabulous, and they offered me a position as a phlebotomist at the plasma center. I was thrilled and accepted their offer, of course.. after two weeks of training, I was able to become a certified for Phlebotomist on the plasma floor.
I’m grateful for my first job. It taught me so much about Phlebotomy and definitely enhance my drawing abilities!
I also met some wonderful people that I am still friends with to this very day!
I like the plasma center for about a year until eventually I’m going down to the hospital! I gained a lot of friends and a lot of knowledge. My first time in my career field was awesome.!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got into this industry originally in 2015! I stayed in this industry because it allowed me to be myself, and I was pretty good at drawing blood.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I think that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be at this very moment! I’m still growing and involving until a better entrepreneur woman I have many ideas on a daily, to add value to myself and my business! I would absolutely choose the same career path!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The main lesson I had to relearn as being an entrepreneur is that I was the boss and not the worker! A lot of the times when we have jobs we break our back for our jobs and we just want everyone to be happy. So ultimately we may run into a brick wall because we’re doing so much! When I became the boss, I realize that you can’t be everywhere at once and sometimes you have to be able to rely on other people and trust other people to be able to get the job done!
I’m glad that I have these lessons in life definitely made me be a better entrepreneur!
