Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to SA Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, SA thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Wow! I have got some beautiful projects but the most meaningful project is At This Time. It’s a short film that is probably the most autobiographical piece I’ve done. In 2018, I wrote a short film called Those Left Behind. I wanted to produce but it was so personal. I shared it with a friend and he was like we must do this one. So after a series of rewrites, it became At This Time.
The film follows an unfulfilled middle school teacher who makes the drastic decision to end her life. She finds herself in a “mid-station” where she watches the effects of her suicide on the people who love her.
I wrote this piece when I was in that dark space where I thought life would be better on the other side. It’s during those dark times that I think of the people I would leave behind if I made such a drastic choice and how they would be affected. I don’t want to hurt anyone, but at the same time, I want my hurt to end. It’s a never-ending cycle. I say that people who commit suicide don’t want to end their lives; they want to end their pain.
I have plans to write a feature for At This Time. It’s in there. I just have to get it out.
SA , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a storyteller in its purest form. Since moving to Atlanta in 2015, I have been able to produce a stage play and 16 short films. I have learned so much along the way. I have SAB Entertainment–the media company that produces all of my work. This year, I am starting PromoPro Creative Studio where I create all things needed for filmmakers to sell or produce a script. I specialize in pitch decks but can create trailers, posters, treatments, etc. I even have my first client.
I created a feature film combining my short films that is streaming on Tubi and others. It’s called Tales from 10th and Northside. I have an unscripted podcast called 10th and Northside where we highlight talent in Atlanta and in the southeast.
Eventually, I will start producing for others. I am planning an anthology book. This year will see me hosting events such as brunches and dinners will live performances.
I will evolve and go as far as the Lord takes me.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe society can be there for creatives mentally. Yes, we need your dollars and your presence at events or to watch projects. But creatives need support when it comes to their mental health as well. I venture to say that most creatives are insecure. They don’t think their work is good enough. The world should build up creatives and let them know that it’s okay. Of course, we need you to go to the movies and download the streams but we also need your love, good will, and positive vibes.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In 2024. Right now, I get to pivot because I have left teaching and I need to sustain myself. it takes time to write and produce a project. During those downtimes, I need to eat. That is why I created PromoPro Creative Studio. I have a knack for telling a story in a pitch deck. So I am reaching out to people I know to create that for them. Because I have written so many projects, I can create treatments, trailers, one-pagers–whatever a writer, actor, or producer needs to visually tell their story. I love being creative and making a pitch deck is a wonderful way to do that. I am even studying graphic design at the University of Texas at Austin to improve. So get with me and get it sold.
