We caught up with the brilliant and insightful SA Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
SA, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
I didn’t start as a filmmaker. I wrote books. The erotica author, Zane, compiled short stories for her anthologies. I had never written erotica so I was definitely stepping out of my comfort zone. I submitted a short story, Your Blindfold. Lo and behold, Zane accepted my story. She paid me $500 for the story. I didn’t cash the check for two years. When mobile deposits came about, I cashed it and was able to keep the check which I still do.

SA, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Born and raised in Mississippi, I began writing full-time in 2010. In 2015, moved to Atlanta and officially launched my own production company, SAB Entertainment. Through this channel, I write and produce short films. In May 2018, I produced my first full stage play, Family Lies which sold out two shows. I am developing a series Chapters-a modern-day Twilight Zone. The show involves the viewers as they choose alternate endings. I have written four features and a one-woman show. I recently launched my streaming service, Kemet TV, distributing content on five platforms. When everything is done, I will have a photography and scene studio and performing arts center.
Education. Encouragement. Engagement. Entertainment. These are my goals each time I create content. You can find all of my work at www.sabentertainment.com
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is watching people being educated when being entertained. I love seeing people learn something without them consciously knowing it. I also love making stuff up. I love people watching. I love giving a character a name, a story, and a history. I love that people are flawed and you can create a character just like them. I love everything about content creatiion.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
What drives my creative journey is knowing I am fulfilling my God-given mission. I truly believe God placed the desire of content creation on my heart. So every time I create a character, a story, or a film, I am living out my testimony. Doing what God put me here to do. Living out my destiny is what drives me. Billions of people inhabiat Earth. If you have a desire to make a film, you have it for a reason. Someone needs your film. Keep going.
