We were lucky to catch up with S.I.L.E.N.C.E. recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, S.I.L.E.N.C.E. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I believe as a Creative, being misunderstood comes with the art and game. And there is always a belief that you need to be attached or known for only one thing. When as human beings we are multifaceted complicated beings. So of course me being interested and well versed in so many things and areas creatively is within parameters. Because there is no boundary or shouldn’t be any boundary to how artistic and creative someone can be.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is S.I.L.E.N.C.E., I am a creative from Queens, NY. I am a singer-songwriter, music producer, actor, model, and more to come lol. I am of Haitian descent, and entrepreneur in the entertainment business… My goal as a creative is to be a motivator, an example to those who may not have the confidence to do themselves. I believe as a creator. I’ve always provided a sort of comfort for others, as to where it can make them unaffraid of being different or doing as they please. People are always in fear of being not accepted or seen as an outcast. I have as well in the past, but due to my daring personality over the years, I’ve been able to stand my ground and do the unexpected of what is not “catered” or geared to me.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Well a lesson that I’ve learned not only as a creative but also as an adult is that not everyone is for you. Believe it or not this lesson comes in many forms as we age. It can start from your parents where they can say this is not the career choice you should make. To the friends that you hold near and dear not supporting your journey. To the rest of the world not seeing the value in the creative you are, knowing that you may be as good or better than the idols they follow. Not to compare though lol, but finding the ones that do see your value and worth and appreciate you for it. Those are your people💯.And I’m not saying of bunch of yes man, but the people who are your people, you will know.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding is seeing the confidence or how inspired a friend or supporter feels when they feel empowered by just watching my journey. Because I’ll be honest, these artistic expressions that I show to the world are literally out of my own motives. I’m literally doing what I desire as a calling. I’m not thinking of whether this is for them to follow or them to be like. It’s literally out of my own needs and wants. But they see me and “go well if he can do I can do it”. Some might see it as a form of disrespect. But I see as a compliment. As in yes you are supposed to do it. These arts are not for the WEAK, AT ALL. And by me having the nerve to try. You should feel empowered and have the nerve to as well. Why not!?
