We recently connected with Ryian Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Ryian, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
Warren Buffet once said that “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” I hope that the decisions I make today will impact my children and my children’s children in a positive way. While I do want to leave a financial legacy, I hope my legacy is one of faith, positivity, and hope that encourages men to want to become the best versions of themselves. I hope the decisions I make whether it is writing a book, speaking, or creating content online will motivate men to see the need to be the best fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, and people in general. I want my legacy to be one that reinforces the importance of men with faith, morals, and integrity.
Ryian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Ryian and I Hail from the Twin island of Trinidad and Tobago. I migrated to the United States in 2010 to pursue a Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. I spent 4 years at Midwestern State University where I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. After entering the workforce for a yeay, I went back to school at the University of Texas Arlington to pursue a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at UTA I started attending Toastmasters clubs and became a member which helped me improve my communication skills, public speaking, and leadership. After graduating from UTA with a Master’s Degree in 2018, I joined a top medical device company where I was able to instantly put the knowledge I gained from my mechanical engineering degrees to work.
In 2017, I married my best friend, Michelle, and we had our son in November 2018. This journey with a newborn inspired me to write my book titled “What in The Fatherhood” where I detailed my journey as a first-time father dealing with all the unexpected, and expected situations you deal with when entering fatherhood. I wrote the book to give other new fathers and fathers-to-be a heads up and also encourage them to be intentional about being there for their spouse during such times and involved in their child’s life from day one.
After honing my skills by participating in toastmasters and speaking at other outlets, I was allowed the opportunity to give a TEDx speech in November 2021. I pride myself on being an engineer that can communicate effectively to any audience in front of me. My goal is to continue encouraging others with my words whether that be on paper, online, or other speaking engagements.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal driving my creative journey is to genuinely help others, especially men feel empowered to become the best version of themselves. Including myself.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
At times being a creative can be a lonely and discouraging journey. Now and again though, you are reminded why you do what you do. For me, it is when I get random direct messages or calls from people telling me how much my words have inspired them or helped them get through a situation similar to the ones I wrote about in my book. It is also rewarding when new fathers relate to my book and get fired up to be intentional, involved fathers.
