Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ryann Wells. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Ryann, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I have been a Hospice Nurse and Nurse Practitioner for over 10 years. This passion has taught me that our time is very limited and to make the best of it. From those experiences I created Riverside Hideout, A shipping container experience, then Hillside Hideout, a Vintage Motorhome retreat. The space comes with no TV, and limited wifi service. It does come fully stocked with plenty of books, games, conversation starters, quiet time, reconnection time and starry nights in the hot tub. End of life care is my passion, but so is living and making sure other people live well too!
Ryann, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a true mompreneur! I am a single mom of two kids. I work as Hospice Nurse Practitioner, mostly from home. Riverside Hideout and Hillside Hideout are my other two pride and joys. They are a huge labor of love. I function as the cleaner, maintenance chick, landscaper, decorator, shopper, greeter, accountant, and digital creator! I advocate strongly for self care and down time. I encourage my guests to settle in and relax. We spend so much time being busy, and rushing that it has become truly difficult for people to just sit down. And sit down with intention. And do nothing. Have you tried it?
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Wow. This question hit home. Yes, my side hustle turned into a full time job! In 2018 I launched Riverside Hideout thinking the weekends would be booked. Maybe a holiday or two. All still working Full time as a Hospice Nurse Practitioner. Then COVID hit, my bookings were solid. I was booked 365 days for 2 years. I had a waiting list. And I worked non stop as a the hospitals Hospice Nurse Practitioner. This was a catch 22 I learned. COVID was obviously awful for most people. The cases I dealt with as a hospice nurse were traumatic. Then in December of 2021 I was fired from my 10 year job as their Hospice/Palliative care Nurse Practitioner. The company lost about 40 employees that year and are till recovering at this date. After a lot of self care and therapy, The Hideouts are now my full time gig, and nursing is my side hustle. This explains why I do 95% of all the tasks myself. This keeps costs low and my standards high. And I can’t advocate enough for self care and downtime!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Resilience: the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties. I think the previous question pertains to this as well. I could have thrown in the towel and gave up. But instead, I sat down, I regrouped and took some time off. At the loss of my full time job, Riverside Hideout was just a side hustle, now I operate 5 short term rentals. If we all gave up when the going got tough, who would do the tough stuff?
