We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ryan Wimmer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
We had a vision to be able to help families break out of the financial stress most find themselves in. My wife and I have four children, and were working regular w2 jobs and rarely had any time or money to enjoy life with our little kids. We came across the insurance industry and quickly realized the endless opportunities to help the community and to build wealth in the process. Our company is a faith based company with a mission to help teach others how to become financially free through the insurance industry as sales reps and team leaders.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up in Western NY, I enlisted to become an infantry Marine at age 18 and was stationed at Camp Lejuene, NC. I met my wife Alisha in NC shortly after and we just celebrated our 10th anniversary and have four beautiful children. I became a licensed general contractor after the military and Alisha was working as registered nurse while pursuing her masters degree. We gave up those jobs to start our company in 2018 and haven’t looked back since.
Our company sets itself apart because of our mission. We know how hard it can be for a family to endure financial stress and through our trainings and company culture, we have been able to take struggling families and teach them how to become prosperous. Our agency allows agents to set their own schedule, and work either remotely or in person which allows them to gain time back with their family.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
We had a negative balance in our account when we started our company. The insurance industry is unique in that you do not need a lot of money to start with. We gathered up the funds to purchase our insurance course and license by using a credit card, which in total was around $200 each. We then started knocking on doors and helping families with life insurance policies. At the end of our first year we were able to payoff over $30k in credit card debt and put over six figures into our savings account. Starting a business is all about the dedication and determination you have to be successful, the money will follow.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Since 2018, our agency has grown significantly and I believe it is due to our desire to help others achieve the financial freedom we were able to. Managing a team is all about leading from the front, especially in sales. You have to have the moral authority to be able to teach your team how to become successful, and it all starts with them seeing you do the work you are asking them to do. You can increase your team morale by getting in the trenches with them. If you lead by example, you will earn their respect and they will want to follow you.
