We recently connected with Ryan Wilcox and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
As a writer and editorial portrait photographer, I have a front-row seat to watch people pursue their dreams. They each have a unique story.
It’s a joy to spearhead creative projects from concept to final delivery. My work includes the stories of entrepreneurs, artists, business executives, and nonprofits.
My most personally meaningful project is storytelling work for Fatima Morken, a professional singer, model, and actress. After multiple interviews and a full-length feature, her life and career story was published.
Our work together has blossomed to include editorial portraiture and album cover design.
Fatima sings in English, Spanish, French, and Italian. She speaks Portuguese, too! The polyglot has traveled worldwide, so I focus on European themes in our concept shoots. You’ll find my portrait work credited in her Canvas Rebel profile!
A story should feel like a well-tailored suit. As I’ve grown as a storyteller, I’ve learned the power of using words and imagery together to communicate an artist’s vision and values.
“Ryan truly takes the time (which is so uncommon nowadays) to patiently listen to an artist’s full background story. He considers artfully how to paint every emotion of that colorful life in his inimitable poetic expression. My most special project with Ryan was a photoshoot for the album cover of my single “Ave Maria”. Wherever I go in life, mountain or valley, a prayer is always on the mind of my heart.” – Fatima Morken
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I live in Fort Worth, TX, and will travel for gigs. I come alongside artists and entrepreneurs to shine a light on their stories. I’m also a creative asset, because doing it all by yourself is difficult, if not impossible.
I’m a published writer and published editorial portrait photographer. I take great pride in tailoring stories to the person in focus.
I’m proud of my work alongside professional artists and models Fatima Morken and Elle J. I’ve also been fortunate to interview Miri Rodriguez, best-selling author and Storyteller for Microsoft.
You have a story. It should be told well.
Have you ever had to pivot?
The ability to push through moments of self-doubt is a skill I admire in the people I work with closely. In my journey, I know picking up a camera took a leap of faith.
At the time, I was frustrated with a job search that wasn’t progressing. It would have been easy to rest and not push myself to be a better version of myself.
It took the encouragement of a friend, but I’m so glad I stepped outside my comfort zone! I didn’t know anything about portrait photography in the beginning. I’ve continued to expand my skillset with every click of the shutter. I’m grateful to the people who have put their creative faith in me.
Don’t quit on yourself; instead, push your limits.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
You are constantly working to beat your yesterday. The drive to succeed is relentless.
I’ve had the good fortune to profile many talented people, and all work on their craft away from the spotlight.
The finished product on social media results from grit and perseverance.
