We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ryan Spears. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ryan below.
Ryan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project is the most recent one I dropped titled Headspace 2 which is a follow up project from the first headspace Ep I made in 2020. The backstory to this project is really simple, the name Headspace represents the current mind state I was in during that time period of my life while I was making all of these songs. And It’s also a play off my name ‘La Head’. In 2022 I was listening to a lot of midwest rappers in Detroit and grew to like the sound of their music and decided to make a song called Billie Jean Freestyle which was a Detroit sounding song. I got some traction from the song and video and I made a poll asking my supporters if they wanted a whole project full of that style and they voted yes. So over the next year I made song after song from all my experiences and picked a good 8 songs out of the options. Everything slowly came together with the cover and track list, I got a couple features from my friends that make music and I just finally dropped it. It’s meaningful to me because I think it’s my best sounding project to this date and I’m proud of it. Deluxe on the way!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started off making music for fun just trying it out and overtime grew to love it. I started getting good feedback from some of the songs I was dropping and I just stayed at it for a few years working on my sound. I decided this year that I was going to take it more serious and put more of an effort to perfect my sound and just put myself out there and it’s been going good. I also started my business La head Gear last year around the same time and have just been trying to elevate and grow ever since. I started La Head Gear because I was looking for St. Louis trucker hats and I couldn’t find any so it only made since to make my own and grow my brand overall.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing your ideas manifest and come to life. Being an artist and making a song from just your ideas is like an adventure into the unknown, you don’t know what you’re going to get when you’re done but you end up trusting the process and bringing it to life. I think being a creative is a very underrated trait because you can take anything from reality and make it into art. I also like seeing how people react to the music, because nobody really see all the hard work and time you put into it but to see them experience it is a great feeling.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I feel like non-creatives won’t understand the phases we go through when creating. Most people just see us dropping music or making art and think it’s just a simple task but in reality they don’t see the late nights, the overthinking, stressing, not feeling up to par with past releases or even just not feeling like you got it. Everyday not the same, some days you feel like the best doing it and some days you don’t feel good enough. I think if people cause see all the stuff we go through they’d respect it a little more.
