We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ryan Sharman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
I believe that the best thing you can do as a business owner to show appreciation to your customers is to provide every single one of them with the best product possible. My product is the courses I deliver, but in more ways, the product is myself. Most anyone can learn CPR and get certified to teach the skills. The reason that I believe I have success in this field is because I am passionate about delivering an excellent product to my clients. Being the owner of the business, I know that the product I put out is a direct reflection of myself. I charge my clients per person. The larger the group class I have, the more money I make. I will travel to people’s homes to conduct courses for as little as two participants. The thing that I do to show my customers that I appreciate them is putting forth the same effort to deliver the best product possible for the group of two participants as I do for the group of 20 participants. Providing quality and consistent service, regardless of the profit, that exceeds your customers expectations is the best thing you can do to show them that you care and are appreciative.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Ryan Sharman. I have been in the emergency medical field since 2010 serving in a multitude of roles. My career started as an Emergency Medical Technician with a private ambulance company. From there I began working in a high-volume urban Emergency Room and Trauma Center as both an ER Technician and then a Paramedic. In 2013, I stepped into the role of a Firefighter/Paramedic with a local city Fire Department and continue to serve in the same capacity today. As a member of the Fire Department I am a Lieutenant on the rescue truck (transport unit). In 2019, I received a Life Safety Award from the Fire Department for a situation in which I took action as the 1st On Scene while off-duty when I witnessed a police officer struck by a vehicle chasing after a burglar on foot.
I began teaching healthcare provider courses in 2012 (BLS, ACLS, PALS, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, HIPAA, OSHA) at universities all over greater South Florida and continued in that role for several years. From there, I spent a few years doing adjunct instructor work at a local healthcare career college precepting groups of EMT and Paramedic students in skills labs and at multiple area Emergency Rooms. I possess the following medical licensure: National Registry Emergency Medical Technician- Paramedic, American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor/Provider, AHA Basic Life Support Instructor/Provider, AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support Instructor/Provider, State of Florida Emergency Medical Services Instructor A & B, Hazardous Materials Toxic Exposure Paramedic.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an audience organically on social media required a lot of time, patience, and strategy on my part. Starting out, I did not want to cut into my profits by paying someone to manage my social media accounts and build me a following. I knew who my target demographic was. I searched for accounts in my targeted demographic and set out to follow 100 new accounts weekly for the first several months. Those that would follow my account back, I would direct message a description of services and a discount code. When I perform my classes I take a group photo at the end of the class to post to my social media accounts. My customers become the stars of my posts which I believe creates a sense of personal connection to my business. I belong to numerous Facebook groups that consist of my potential client base and I post information about my business on those pages weekly. I would say that most of my business is acquired through the use of social media without paying for advertising!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My reputation is built around the fact that I deliver expert level instruction in the comfort of people’s homes or offices. Instead of using PowerPoint presentations, videos, or following a script, my courses are fluid and emphasize the students engaging with the instructor so that they become comfortable performing the skills. Traditionally, the subject of CPR and emergency training is pretty dull and grim. The instructors deliver canned courses in a classroom environment that do not attract the participants’ attention. I make the training accessible, enjoyable, and understandable.
