We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful RYAN SAWYER. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with RYAN below.
RYAN, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Old Town Golf was started in our living room. I came home one day and told my wife golf is getting too expensive and i want to find a way to pay for it and not touch our accounts, so i went after it. I would be out on my sales calls and start searching an app called ” offer ” up to find older clubs that i could clean up rebuild etc. and sell on eBay. Month one i was able to pay my golf tab! Then it really started to resonate with me i want to build custom golf shafts and clubs that anyone can afford. Growing up from pretty humble beginnings i think would 12-year-old me be able to afford the game? equipment? anything? the answer is no i wouldn’t or couldn’t.
Our mission is we build custom golf shafts for ANYONE whether you’re a tour player (which we have built for frequently) or a once-a-year company scramble player we have a solution for you. our price points range from $15 all the way to $30o for custom built or raw component products. We are lovers of the game, former players and genuine golf nuts. we feel your pain and want you to play better golf.
Lastly being a master fitter and watching a few thousand golfers hit balls i realize the power of customization and the right shaft is the engine of the car. Without a good engine you won’t get far. Our goal is to take your vehicle (golf club) from any year and make it perform better with our engine ( the custom golf shaft )

RYAN, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Ryan Sawyer and ive been around golf my whole life. I’ve been in the business of golf for fifteen years. I’ve always loved the grind being an athlete and as we get older the sports grind mindset can be applied to business and its alot of fun. Golf is you vs you and so is business so the synergies between those two have been great. My company solves an issue for golfers. We make golf clubs perform better with custom shaft optimization and we do it at wholesale pricing.
I think the thing i value most is my family, i really do love being home and hanging with my wife and little girl. To be able to build a company that supports my team, allows me to be home every night for dinner and only hop on a airplane for vacation is the greatest currency the world can offer. MY biggest supporter has been my wife and really does make me find things in myself that i didn’t know i had. My daughter has taught me patience and that also is a skill i hadn’t yet figured out.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
So in the beginning stages of building my company i wanted to do it debt free and try to mitigate the risk as much as possible. So i worked three jobs and we had a newborn. it was hard there wasn’t a lot of sleep. but today i just work on my business and get plenty of sleep :)
end of the day its hard but chose your hard

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I took $500 cash from my savings and used my debit card to start an llc for 399$.
i then hit garage sales, offer up, craigslist to get and find as many golf clubs as possible.
then i would liquidate on ecomn and re invest all the profit. then just rinse and repeat nothing fancy.
nothing special. but i would highly advise against debt in any form
