We were lucky to catch up with Ryan Minter recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I think I knew from a really young age that I needed to pursue something creative. I was never really artistically or musically inclined as a kid, but I always hated the idea of someone having authority over me. I remember I always hated having to turn in doctors notes in school. For some reason that specifically really pissed me off. I’d be like “I wasn’t at school, the damage is already done. I don’t need to prove where I was or wasn’t”. The same idea carries over to career stuff. I realized I needed to be able to do what I do best on my own terms.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a nonbinary artist currently based in Brooklyn, New York, and I also make music under the name “Buff Ginger”!
I sort of fell into being a graphic designer by accident. I was working for a small venue called Berlin Under A as a booking intern, and one day they asked if I could photoshop a banner or something for them in a pinch, and they really liked it so I designed gig posters for them for about a year. Now I’m all on my own working freelance from my apartment.
I’ve always been interested in music so making gig posters was the perfect blend of my interests in visual art and music. It also means i get to go to a lot of shows which is really nice.
I think I’m proudest of one the more recent posters I did for “Thus Love”, who are the sweetest people and some good friends of mine. They’re opening for Viagra Boys and Shame who are some of my favorite bands, so it was crazy to look down and see the name of a band I love on a poster I designed.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think being able to connect with other people on a really personal level through something I make is just wild. Especially when I make a record, I want the person listening to feel something, yah know?
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
