We were lucky to catch up with Ryan Joseph recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. So, we’d appreciate if you could open up about your growth story and the nitty, gritty details that went into scaling up.
When starting my filmmaking journey I was mindlessly going out and making films with my friends to try to understand the craft and learn how to make something good. In 2019 I quit my job as a Sony Experience Expert selling TVs and not 6 months later covid happened. This was a fight or flight situation where I had to make a decision on how I would live the next 5 years of my life. I decided to message and reach out to a lot of rappers and musicians in San Diego to offer music videos and, to my surprise, ended up shooting over 100 videos within that year.
To bring this back to the subject of scaling… I had to look at what was in front of me vs what I wanted. I loved making small videos but felt there was a gap in my creative that I wanted to fill. The only way I was going to get to the next level was to STOP doing what I was currently doing and push for more. So I did — cutting off practically all of my incoming and saying ‘no’ to almost every off that came to me. Instead I looked to get work as a grip or AC or operator to get on larger sets. I looked for larger budget projects so I could work with a team of people to bring many talents into a single project. I found myself producing and organizing shoots more and more over the next few years. I actively decided each day to push myself and not settle.
On January 1st, 2024 I officially organized my business with the state and founded 5ECHOS LLC. I now face a frontier that I’ve never ventured into before. I’m greatly looking forward to the next step of my journey and to keep building bigger and better works of art with the best people I know.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me it’s owning my time. I can, generally speaking, decided what I’m going to do each minute of my life. This is a double edged sword as that comes with a massive responsibiility to do the right thing and to put in the work — which can mean that often I’m doing boring, maticulious tasks that are necessary but uninteresting. This sacrafice allows me to work on the projects that I want, spend time with friends and family more often, and to live in the moment each day and for me that is priceless.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Everything that I own at this time has been built up slowly and incrementally. I’ve tried to spend only what I have but there has been occaisions where I’ve taken out small loans to get resources quicker. We are always looking for more oppertunities to scale and grow and larger investments are something that could be materializing soon. We shall see.
